CAMS Tim McClung is Va. Middle School Principal of the Year.

Central Academy’s Principal Tim McClung is a popular administrator among his faculty, students and parents. In June he was named Middle School Principal of the Year in the State of Virginia at the meeting of the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals. He has advanced to the Met Life sponsored National Association of Secondary School Principals to be held in Arlington, VA  in September. There he will compete for the national award.

“I don’t like hoopla,” said McClung. “Really this is a reflection of my teachers. The state recognized the report card from Central Academy and that is how they noticed me.” Matter of fact he had a window of a few days and an interview in late May/early June to  get his application in to the state. He went  for the interview as one of three and ultimately became the award winner.

He interviewed the day after being on an overnight field trip to Baltimore with a host of energetic middle schoolers, too!

An avid hunter and sports enthusiast,  he is comfortable in a school with many rural students who have similar interests.  His screen saver  is a photo of a boar bear that is frequenting his neighborhood. What a cool picture!

In September he will attend the conference and gets to spend a day on Capital Hill. So far other than a picture op he isn’t sure if he will get to spend anytime with either Sen. Mark Warner or Rep. Bob Goodlatte, but he is hopeful.

Faculty members have praised him for years. McClung said, “It was a real honor to be pictured with state School Superintendent Patricia Wright and Board of Education member Dan Foster. “He remarked that Botetourt County administration has been very supportive of him, too. He will soon be honored by the School Board at its August regular meeting.

He has a nice plaque hanging on the wall in his office and he will find out in September how well he he did in the national competition with middle school  principals in 49 other states. For Life touch photos of the June event click here
