Photos from Lord Botetourt vs. James River varsity football
John Wimmer shares this photo gallery from Friday night’s traditional cross-county clash between Lord Botetourt and James River football.
Aaron McFarling has this account of the game in The Roanoke Times.
Earlier we had photos of the JV game, and the varsity and JV volleyball games.

I have to say I am embarrassed to say I am from Botetourt County after hearing of the behavior during Friday night’s game by some of the students from Lord Botetourt. I understand the JRHS marching band was booed during their performance. A friendly rivalry between the two schools is to be expected, but the poor behavior exhibited shows a complete lack of class on the part of all who are responsible (this includes parents and faculty who allow this sort of behavior to be tolerated).
I agree with you Mary! What a poor example these students set with their actions. I hope that the faculty and parents who allow this sort of behaviour realize that sportsmanship, on and off the field, is the finest measure of the success of any fan or team – be it from the north or the south end of the county. As for the Marching Knights – you guys rock! Keep up the spirit and the good work!
I wasn’t at the game but this is common place with the students at LB. The administration here allows this including the dress, signage and vocal taunts. The exact opposite is true of JR where administration has this reined in. My challenge to parenst is to call the principal and central office and voice your displeasure with this.
I was at the game Friday night and it is unfortunate that in their zeal the LB student section forgot Character Counts. Even worse the young CAMS middle schoolers who are in the JRHS band got their first taste (for the the 7th graders) of being on the field which had to be nerve racking, only to be greeted by “Boos” after their performance. As an alumni of Lord Botetourt with my two older children also LBHS grads in the 2000′s decade, I was appalled. What a shame and in this case that the friendly rivalry between the two high schools is not so fun anymore. The damage is already done and hopefully will not happen again.
Sadly some things never change, being a 70′s JR grad this same type of stuff went on way back then as well. Shame on the LBHS students who took part as well as the LBHS administration for allowing it. I guess none of you at LB remember the banner you have hanging from the front of your building and all it supposedly symbolizes
What a poor example these students set with their actions, these students probley have never been in any kind of activities at the School where they are in front of the public, not part of a team to know what it feels like to be BOOed at—-Just shows they have NO CLASS. It takes more GUTTS to be in front of people then it does to Hide behind BOO’s.If that would had been JR students doing that they would had been singled out at the time right in front of everyone!!!!!! Seen it happen before when some students were rude at ballgames before!
I guess character only counts when you are the biggest dog in the fight, huh? I hope someone has the class and the character to apologize, publically, to those poor kids. Cathy, any idea what, if anything, the LBHS administration intends to do about this sort of behavior?
Well I am so proud of the student section showing their pride. They did not “boo” during the performance, it was after when the band walked in front of our marvelous student section.
Omg. Who cares
sorry that lord botetourt has too much swag for river to handle.
Don’t know why schools teach the whole alphabet in their fancy words classes. Only letters that folks need to know are U S A . MERICA
rednwhite and botetourt!
we won you lost. enough said.
freedom of speech at its finest. our great country of america allows this in the first amendment. questioning this behavior, is questioning your country. go cavs
LB > JR
Game over! Let’s move on!
So, even in this blog we allow the bullies to have the last word – and notice how everyone avoids the REAL issue – these children exhibited, and continue to exhibit poor sportsmanship and basic decency. Let’s agree and move on from that.
why is James river saying LB has no class? the only class James river students have is algebra II. CAV NATION
You people need to get a life. The last time I looked there is a 1st ammendment saying we have freedom of speech. All these kids were doing was showing team spirit. They were not using any foul language. They made a sign honoring one of the players STAN-DA-MAN to show him they care about him and the LB football team. These kids do play other sports and a lot of them have been booed in the past and they know that is just part of it. Where was the big administration for JR?? when their student section was shining a LASER at the LB kids in the stands. To me this is more dangerous than hearing a boo from the students. As for the administration at LB they need to leave the kids alone and let them show team spirit. They need to worry about more important things in the school system rather than if kids are cheering their classmates at a footaball game. If the administation feels the need to talk to someone they might need to talk to the parents who scream at the coach because there kid is not getting enough playing time or calling the wrong play. I would like to see that but we know that will NOT happen. PS.. Benson you need to get a life and real camera…
As an LBHS alum and with children headed to JRHS, I hope that everyone learns from this and shows a little more COMMUNITY spirit next time. This is ridiculous that our two ends of the county are still going at it. As an avid college football fan, I know all about school spirit and what goes on at football games and as long as it stays a fun rivalry then I’m all for it. However, this name calling and ugliness is unacceptable. It makes the whole community look bad. As Cathy said, Game over!
HOLD UPPP??? YOU TALKING MESS ABOUT MY SCHOOL???? OHHHH NOOOOO, IMMA GO OFFFFFF!!!!
I think that as adults talking like that about teenagers is very disrespectful also very immature! Like roanoke times said kids will be kids. Nothing was meant in a harm way torwards river or their students as i recall last year during basketball games and football games James River decided to “make fun” as you would say about Lord Botetourt! Although i think there is an equal amount of country in both schools. So how about the adults including mainly the ones on top .. should really grow up.
IMMA HAVE TO AGREE WITH YA GIRL FROM THE STREETZZZZ
Maybe they are jealous that botetourt looks so classy and good in camo more than them
It is unfair to pin this on the entire student section. Whether or not it happened or when it happened does not mean everyone was involved. Although this action was rude, it was a show of school spirit which students are encouraged to have. And the rudeness goes both ways. JR has done similar things to LB in the past.
considering the fact i was right beside the student section and heard NO booing, this is a bunch of bologna. The James River students were just as disrespectful to LB. And honestly its a rivalry, grow up. Dear parents, you’re not in high school anymore(hard to believe i know). The LB students are showing pride for their school and should NOT be reprimanded for this. If you want to complain about something at least find something valid to complain about. Put your big girl panties on and get over it.
This is ridiculous, JR basketball student sections talk just as much. And to “supports both schools” no way you have any knowledge about college football rivalries, stuff like this and more happen all the time. People need to relax and put things into perspective. It’s funny that River thinks they’re better when they’ve had the car stereo ordeal among other things.
I was like river, river, river lostttttttttttttttt like river, river, riverrrr losttttttttttttttttt!
yes there was booing i dont want to here that there was not. bold faced lie there lb fan. can we let the matter die? please as a river kid just let it go sure we have been jerks in the past So has lb. we both have. i dont agree with any of it. it is not school spirit to boo or taunt or anything at anyone else. that goes for both sides.
I believe the comments from some of the LB students has proved my point. Sad.
“Maybe they are jealous that botetourt looks so classy and good in camo more than them” Is this a real sentence?
HAHA! I agree! Considering all the bad grammar found in these comments I’m thinking they need less time commenting on stories and more time studying!
