Reader sheds some light on the local grocery store freezers…
Susan Owen of Eagle Rock sent in an interesting observation about the trip down the frozen food aisle at Kroger. Some of you may have wondered about this too, so Susan has provided the scoop on those dark to bright freezers!
“A Magic Moment at the Daleville Kroger nearing the end of my grocery shopping, I rolled away from dairy, passed ice cream, and was making a left turn at the corner to grab a few frozen entrees. I noticed that all the lights were off in the frozen food displays on both sides of the aisle but then the two nearest to me lighted up. As I walked down the aisle, displays just ahead of me lit and, by the time I got to the end, all the displays were lit. I felt like I had just walked the red carpet and looked around for someone who could verify this magical event.”
No one.
Two frozen food workers came into the aisle to stock shelves and I asked them about it. They assured me that the lighting system was an energy-saving device triggered by sensors and had been there ever since the store opened several years ago. The effect is even more stunning when the overhead lights are turned off at night (the store is open 24 hours.) I still think it was a magical moment and I’m anticipating a frozen food urge soon. Oh, say about 9:00 PM.”

PS from the BV–The Food Lion freezers do the same!
