Event:  Chamber Community Day at the Botetourt Sports Complex-Military Appreciation Benefit Softball Tournament

When:  Saturday, September 29

Where:  Botetourt Sports Complex

Time:  12 noon to 3 pm

Presented by:  Botetourt County Parks & Recreation and Botetourt County Chamber of Commerce

Cost:  $3 (Price includes a meal of choice of hamburger/BBQ/hot dog, one side item, dessert and drink.)

Information:  Enjoy an afternoon of food and girls fast pitch softball.  Competition will include Virginia Tech, James Madison, Liberty, Radford and Longwood.  A special ceremony is scheduled for 2 pm to honor the military.  Everyone is asked to make a donation of $5 or more to benefit the Military Family Support Center.  Call the Chamber at 473-8280 or respond to this email to register.  Deadline is September 27.

Event:  Wine Tasting Dinner

When:  Tuesday, October 9

Where:  The Kyle House in Fincastle

Time:  6 pm to 9 pm

Cost:  $75 per person (includes tax & gratuity)

Wayne Henderson Performs at The Glebe

 When:  Tuesday, September 18, at 7:00 PM.

 A skilled craftsman and respected musician, Wayne Henderson’s top-notch finger-picking is a source of great pleasure and pride to his friends, family, and neighbors in southern Virginia; his guitar playing has also been enjoyed at Carnegie Hall, in three national tours of “Masters of the Steel-String Guitar”, and in seven nations in Asia and in European Countries as well as at the University of California at Berkeley. In addition to his reputation as a guitarist, Henderson is a luthier (builder of string instruments) of great renown and has taught guitar making in various colleges in Virginia (at Ferrum),  in California, North Carolina, Washington State and in West Virginia.  Wayne’s guitars have been featured in a display at the Taubman Museum in Roanoke.  Wayne has built instruments for many well known musicians ranging in style from Doc Watson to Eric Clapton. He is a recipient of a 1995 National Heritage Award presented by Hillary Clinton for the National Endowment for the Arts at the White House. Wayne is almost as well-known for the mandolins he has made.  Reservations are a must due to limited seating.  Admission is free but a charitable donation will be accepted for The Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) Foundation.  Call The Glebe at 540-592-2101 to reserve a seat.

Understanding Your Digital Camera

For beginning photographers or anyone who wants to learn more about your digital camera. You’ll be able to take better pictures and get more comfortable using your camera. We’ll cover all the main buttons and switches, and explain the digital workflow from taking the photo, editing and correcting problems, sharing it online and making a print. Bring your camera and owner’s manual. With Chuck Almarez of Fire and Light Gallery, Clifton Forge.

Upcoming Photography Classes at the Greenfield Center

Basic SLR Photography

A popular series of classes designed to help beginning photographers learn how to effectively operate their cameras and take better pictures. Learn about basic settings and techniques for lighting and composition.

Dates: Tuesdays, October 2 – November 13, 2012 (no class October 30)

Night Photography

Discover how night photography can open a whole new world of creative opportunities and can produce some amazing results.

Dates: Wednesdays, October 3 – November 7, 2012 (no class October 31, will meet October 30 instead)

Landscape Photography

Learn how to capture the grandeur of what you see in the natural world.

Dates: Mondays, October 1 – November 5, 2012

All classes will run: 6:30 – 8:30pm

Cost:  $80 per person, per class

For all three classes: You must provide your own camera and owner’s manual. A 35mm digital SLR camera with at least one interchangeable lens is preferable, but you may use any digital camera with manual capabilities. A sturdy tripod is recommended for the night and landscape classes.  Instructor: Steven Norris, an on-location, natural-light photographer who has served the greater Roanoke, New River Valley and Smith Mountain Lake areas of Southwest Virginia for 20 years.
