Botetourt’s Purple boxes go away: Emerald Ash Borer in Virginia

Ed Wesser traveled around Botetourt County on Thursday, Sept. 20 retrieving Emerald Ash Borer traps. He used a long pole with a hook to take down the purple boxes lining roads through out the county.

Wesser is working for a sub contractor for the United States Department of Agriculture. Retired from the United States Forest Service, Wesser has been all over SW Virginia removing the boxes. As of this morning no EAB’s were found on the  sticky purple boxes in Botetourt County. There are some finds in SW Va and also Giles County near the WV border. He didn’t find any in Roanoke County, either.

There were plenty of  Cicada remains on the Botetourt boxes, but no EAB’s , thankfully.

Wesser did caution there is a state wide ban on  moving firewood.  The Emerald Ash Borer can be spread by transport. ” Tell your readers if they saw up a tree they can’t take it over to Grandma’s in another area. The state is under Quarantine. ”
