On August 31, Eagle Rock Elementary had a Celebration of Reading with an assembly to kick-off the school year. Principal, Ms. Jessica Martin, led the students in a reading cheer. Ms. Martin challenged the students to read a 1000 books before the end of the year. The number of books read is being charted on a graph near her office door.
As part of the assembly, students who participated in the Botetourt County Schools Summer Reading Project were honored with an ice cream party. Those students recognized completed 75% or more of the project. Also honored were those rising-second graders who participated in the Drive-In Reading program. This program was sponsored by Mrs. Dodie Thompson and Mrs. Tamara Teaff. Several times during the summer, students and their families drove up to the school and received, right in the parking lot, a packet of books to take home to read.
