Lord Botetourt Student places 1st in National Competition

Saturday, September 15th 2012

Congratulations to Josh Pinkard and the entire FFA team. The Lord Botetourt FFA’s Farm Business Management Team placed 2nd in Eastern Regional Competition in Springfield, Massachusetts on Saturday September 15th. Team members included Scott Harris, Courtney Henderson, Josh Pinkard and Aaron Treadway. Josh PInkard was recognized as the High Individual in Farm Business management and Aaron Treadway recognized as the eighth high individual in the competition as well.

Each year students from the 18 eastern states attend the Eastern States Exposition, (commonly known as the Big E),these students win this opportunity by qualifying at state competition. With this performance our team helped Virginia win the Big E Banner, which meant that Virginia displaced Ohio which had held this honor for many years.

The State FFA Farm Business Management Career Development Event provides competition that fosters information assimilation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills necessary to successfully manage a farm or pursue farm business management careers. The State FFA Farm Business Management Career Development Event enhances and encourages opportunities for all participants to receive instruction that develops farm business management skills. Skills including, understanding marketing of farm products on the futures market and contracting, budgeting, cash flow statements, interest calculators, balance sheets, Tax preparation etc….

Aside from thecompetition,  students  took time to tour the Big E . It is one of the largest Agricultural Fairs in the nation that includes the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
