The bright orange fence has been removed from the upper bank of the James River on the Buchanan Town Park in preparation of the dedication of the Buchanan Bicentennial Gazebo. Activities are scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m., and the Town invites you to be part of this special event. The Town Park, which was established in 1903 by the Buchanan Town Improvement Society and given as a gift to the Town, has been undergoing a face lift in honor of the Town’s 200th anniversary. The Town of Buchanan was founded in 1811 and chartered in 1812. The recent renovations are culminating with the dedication of the Buchanan Bicentennial Gazebo.
Improvements to the Town Park in honor of the Town’s bicentennial were initiated under Mayor Tom Middlecamp, and have been continuing smoothly under current Mayor Larry Hall. Recent improvements include the construction of a Gateway Sign and landscaping as part of two Eagle Scout projects by Lee McCoy and Hunter McCoy, the donation of basketball rims by Donald Helms, as well as continued river-bank cleanup, the placement of new benches along the upper bank, and the construction of the Bicentennial Gazebo.
Plans to construct the gazebo became reality when Nancy Middlecamp came up with the fundraising concept of $200 for the 200th. Middlecamp’s work generated 35 individuals, families, businesses and civic organizations donating toward the construction of the gazebo. Plans for the placement of the gazebo were worked on by Engineering Concepts, and local contractor Shorty Boblett constructed the gazebo during the heat of this summer. Town resident Ed Tolley volunteered his time and talents to work with the Eagle Scouts to complete the construction of the Gateway Sign and pavement for the landscaping, and he has just completed the stonework on the foundation of the Gazebo. Town employees Paul Petty, Clarence Stinnett and Cleatus Newcomb are currently completing the final touches to the Bicentennial Gazebo in preparation of the dedication ceremony scheduled for this Saturday.
Downtown Revitalization Program Manager is organizing the dedication of the gazebo to include a short program followed with a ribbon cutting and light refreshments provided by the members of the Buchanan Special Events Committee and Buchanan Town Improvement Society.
