Thanksgiving at Breckinridge Elementary School

Breckinridge students celebrated Thanksgiving early on November 19. Many parents and grandparents came for lunch and were treated to a traditional Thanksgiving meal prepared by JoAnn Edwards and her staff. Younger students enjoyed special activities in the gym, and the kindergarten students dressed up as Pilgrims or Indians. It was a great day!

Photos: Visit St. Nick’s Christmas Fair in Blue Ridge area (460 West) Nov. 30-Dec-2

Looking for a fun family outing this weekend of Nov. 30-Dec. 2 and help a good deed, too? Visit St. Nick’s Christmas Fair. A group of friends headed up by Jessica Lankford, sew together in the basement of Carson Kistner’s home. They came up with an idea to bring Christmas cheer to  orphans in India. For thirty dollars each, the children will get an outfit, shoes, candy and a toy.

This weekend the ladies sewing  group is hosting St. Nick’s Christmas Fair and the hours are Friday 9-8, Saturday 9-8 and Sunday 1-8. The farm is just west of Food Lion. They hope to raise enough from the event to help all of the children and perhaps change the world a bit as well.

Located on a farm owned by Rainbow Forest Baptist Church just off US 460 West, Blue Ridge Blvd, ( watch for the brightly decorated sign,) the event  is Friday through Sunday. There are hayrides–lighted in the evening with Christmas lights. Eat  S’mores  cooked beside a bonfire. Christmas crafts including American Doll clothes, childrens clothing, wall hangings, baked goods, jewelry and quilts. 100 floyd Co. fraser firs are for sale in the lot beginning at $45.

Said Heidi Grooms, “100% of the funds  will go to the orphans.” Her  husband Jonathan Grooms, is  the president of Global Partners in Peace and Development, a Non profit helping the children. It is headquartered in Blue Ridge. The organization is a 501(c) 3 non profit, too so monetary donations are tax deductible. They specialize in sponsorships of international children in Haiti, India, Jordan, Slovokia and Uganda.

For more information on their mission, see GPartners.org. To make a donation by mail,  send  a check to: Global Partners PO Box 117, Blue Ridge , VA 24064.

Buchanan Brownie Troop 958 recently spent the day at Girl Scout’s Camp Icimani in Roanoke County earning the Alaska Council’s Dog Sledding Badge. The Siberian Husky Assist Rescue made it possible for the girls to earn this badge by bringing their dogs and sledding equipment, and educating the girls about the breed, and the history of dog sledding. The Siberian Husky Assist rescues Siberian Huskies from shelters in Southwest Virginia from Roanoke south to Knoxville, Tenn. For more information about their cause, visit their website at www.siberianhuskyassist.com.

Save Dec 14 for Rachel’s Challege Event at LB-JR boys basketball game

Save the date:  Dec. 14, 2012.

It is an important community event: Rachel’s Challenge. Events begin at 5 p.m. prior to the county high school match up of the Lord Botetourt and James River boys basketball game in Daleville. Rachel’s Challenge promotes kindness in  high schools and middle schools across the world.  More importantly the precepts can be applied to  daily life.Games, face painting, air brushed tatoos, a  school and community drive for Carilion Children’s Clinic, an Act of Kindness award, are all part of the night and much more!

Just this week a video went viral of a New York City policeman buying shoes for a homeless man. It is a snapshot of what Rachel’s Challenge teaches in a message that brings the idea of kindness to millions of students around the world.

More information about the student led week long events, both middle school and high schools, Rachel’s Challenge  will be coming  next week.

“Save the date for now. You will be glad you did.” said Supervisor for Secondary Education, Dr. Joni Poff.
