LBHS YOVASO awarded 2nd in State in “Save Your Tailgate” competition

Lord Botetourt High School YOVASO ( Youth of Virginia Speaking Out about traffic safety) spent  part of the fall working on the statewide “Save Your Tailgate- Buckle Up” campaign. Students worked football games, had a 5th quarter party after a game, made a point to get area businesses to post signs in support, the Crash Dummies appeared and many more activities. “With recent teen traffic fatalities in the Roanoke Valley, we believe in the cause even more,” said Jackie Collins the club sponsor who asked for a moment of silence for the families and friends of the victims.

Just three years ago only a handful of students participated. Today 29 students are part of the club. School administrators and Dr. Tony Brads, School Superintendent, were on hand to see the students get the award and participate in a pizza party.

Through the efforts Lord Botetourt’s dedicated YOVASO club, they came in a close second to  Stuart’s Draf t High School.  On Monday they received a plaque and a two hundred dollar check. Said Club President Grace Boardwine. “Thanks to all  of you, I think we have made a difference.”

Collins said, “One point, when the Crash Dummies were in front of the high school several people driving by the school were seen reaching over and putting on their seat belts. We know they were getting the message.”
