Troutville Elementary School held the annual medal ceremony for the community to honor veterans on Nov. 12. Orville Ruid, 99 was the oldest WWII Vet in attendance. Approximately 40 veterans were honored. Troop 137 scouts, cubs and webelos presented the colors to begin the ceremony.
Ruid was in the US Navy in WWII. He still lives at home with his cat Charly, shops at Kroger and even wore his Navy hat to answer the door on Halloween for trick or treaters.
Many received medals from their grandchildren and relatives. Others from organizer Lee Minnix and Boy scouts.
Music by Rader Funeral home’s Angela Jasper, A quartet performed the Star Spangled Banner, poetry reading s by four students, Anna Kryder, Olivia Bray, Brendan Bell, Cody Camper, and Ryan Rigatti .A poetic salute read by Col. Glenn Hammond kicked off the honors and introductions by Rev. Dave Rochford were among highlights.
The entire student body present at the event sand “thank you soldiers.” It was as always a momentous occasion.
