When the beleaguered Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department relinquished control to Botetourt County EMS a couple of weeks ago, a huge question occurred on the future of the Buchanan Carnival. It has been run by the Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department for over 60 years.
The Buchanan Carnival is voted annually as one of the best events in Botetourt County on the Botetourt View’s “Best of Botetourt.”
Mayor Larry Hall said on Wednesday November 14 that town council voted the previous Monday night to take over the carnival with county blessing. “I hope the same volunteers will still come and run the operations of food stands and other important parts of the carnival. We plan to still have the carnival and use the funds after expenses to go back to the Fire Department through the county EMS.”
He says some new events to attract volunteers to the Buchanan Fire Dept. are in the works for the annual week long event. Also in the mix came a property returned to the Town of a metal EMS building on the Carnival grounds on Lowe Street. Hall says the building will continue to be used by EMS. The Town also owns the firehouse on Main Street.
