Top stories of 2012 include Derecho, Billy Joe Carter, Budget Woes, Accidents on I-81

Trees were uprooted through out Botetourt County on the night of June 29, 2012.

The top Botetourt Story in 2012: The Derecho

Few had heard of the word “Derecho,” but many know it now. Defined as a fast moving straight line weather system with tornado like winds, the weather event hit Botetourt around 8:45 p.m. on  Friday June 29 and  left thousands of Botetourt residents without power through early July. A brief but highly destructive weather event, devastated forests, landscaping, caused property damage and took down power lines when it sped through the area. It upturned trees, dropped trees on cars and homes, blasted the Buchanan Carnival and ultimately tested the patience of the customers of three different power companies in Boteourt County. Followed  by a week of sweltering heat, the power grid failed for county water systems and gave newly hired EMS Director Carr Boyd a baptism without water. The Town of Fincastle postponed the 4th of July activities ’til the following Sunday.

Coming in almost like a series of  terrible weather events were the trials and tribulations of Billy Joe Carter, former Buchanan Volunteer Fire Chief. In two of his more prominent altercations this year, Carter involved himself in a man with a gun event in Buchanan and the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Deprtment. He is also accused with Rape in another event, and currently sits in the Botetourt Craig Public Safety Building behind bars. He also came to fisticuffs with a citizen at the annual carnival and  became involved in a word brawl with a Roanoke City Fire Captain. The Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department could not survive the stress and in the fall of this year, disbanded and Botetourt County EMS  had to take over the fire department for the citizens. The Town of Buchanan will  be responsible for the annual Carnival held for over 60 years as a fundraiser for the former volunteer fire department.

The Battle of the County Budget will likely continue. When County administrator Jerry Burgess retired in late winter, Kathleen Guzi assumed the helm. She hit the ground running. Over 400 people attended  the end of March budget meeting in the Lord Botetourt High School  auditorium that featured speakers from all walks of life. Ultimately a 7 cents per hundred real estate  tax rate increase and and personal property tax rate increase filled gaps. The coming year promises to be as tight, if not more so.

Accidents involving cars and trucks continue to keep I-81 through Botetourt County a source of fire and rescue response as well as a source of contention for motorists. The area from Exit 162 north and south to mile marker 176 continues to be a source of accidents with weather and driver speed contributing to many of the crashes. The February accident that killed a trucker from Pennsylvania closed I-81 north for almost an entire day. Since then, numerous back-ups and more fatalities have been noted in the Botetourt View both online and on Facebook.

Former Buchanan Treasurer Wanda Smith embezzled thousands from the Town and was convicted in 2012 and is currently serving time for her crimes.

In the good news column, once again, Botetourt School students excelled academically as well as in Sports. Cloverdale Elementary School for the fourth year in a row achieved a Governor’s School of Excellence Award. James River High School Girl’s Track team were State Champs. Mike Jones of LBHS  captured the state 2A wrestling crown for the heavy weight class.  Numerous sports teams from both schools competed  on the regional level and into the state level in sports.

No large new business located to Botetourt County, but several new small businesses located here. For a list  search “Business” on the Botetourtview.com site.

The Botetourt View online offers monthly scroll downs for 2012. Check each month for a review  of what happened in 2012.

JRHS Key Club raised over 400 toys for Marine Corps League in Lexington

Area children were the recipients of over 400 Christmas Toys for Tots raised by the James River High School Key Club. While the students of JRHS donated text messages so Staunton River High School could win the annual concert, the toys went to the Marine Corps League 1351 in Lexington. The Marine Corps League had families in Rockbridge and Botetourt counties waiting for the toys and bikes. SRHS lost four students in a period of a week to car crashes associated with Route 24, so the Knights senior class  asked to donate the JRHS texts to them.

Area citizens and Gala Industries also sent toys to the school for the drive.

Said spanish teacher Lindsey Price of the toy drive, who is one of he sponsors, “We did really well with our collection this year and Mrs. Carolyn Shotwell’s first block class won the party for the most toys donated.” The winning class will recieve a party of either pizza, breakfast or ice cream.

Goodlatte: The Senate Must Act

Washington, D.C.:  Congressman Bob Goodlatte released the following statement on Friday urging the Senate to take action to rein in government spending and avoid the fiscal cliff:

“It’s time for the Senate to act. The House of Representatives has already passed legislation that would prevent significant tax increases set to go into effect in 2013.  We have offered alternatives to avert the fiscal cliff and rein in out of control spending, yet the Senate has failed to come to the table.  It is clear that we cannot address the fiscal crisis and looming tax hikes without addressing the root of the problem – spending and debt.  Congress has the opportunity and responsibility to change the spending culture in Washington and ensure that a strong America remains for generations to come. I urge the Senate to take action now to avoid the nation being saddled with higher taxes and skyrocketing debt.”

The gift of Hospice

The benefit of hospice has gained more understanding among the public and medical communities in recent years, but one aspect of hospice goes unnoticed.  Someone I know and love is “graduating” from hospice services.

My 96 year old Mom had left the hospital in September, still weak as a result of pneumonia and other complications, and unable to feed herself.  Returning to her room at Richfield Retirement, it was obvious that she was at a turning point in her health.  After losing over 10% of her weight recently, her weakness resulted in the inability to walk or even stand.  She continued to decline and that’s when hospice was called by the family to help.

An RN from Medi-Hospice made an immediate visit to determine whether Mom was appropriate for hospice services.  After the admission, she coordinated with the medical staff at the facility and made a few changes to her medications. She also ordered a special mattress and other equipment, all paid for by hospice.  A hospice Social Worker arrived to assist the patient and family in addressing topics like Living Wills, Advanced Directives and any financial needs. Medi’s Chaplain and volunteer were soon paying visits, offering mom spiritual support and companionship. As part of a team effort, hospice and facility staff kept watchful vigil over my Mom, providing much needed relief to our family.

With all the extra care Mom was receiving, her appetite returned and soon she was not only feeding herself, but wondering when lunch was coming!  We knew mom was returning to her old self when she began to keep the facility and hospice staff laughing.  Mom was joined by family, hospice staff and Beth Herndon, Social Worker-Richfield Retirement, at a picnic (at which she ended by eating two slices of pumpkin pie).

Hospice is not designed to care for those expected to recover, but statistics show that as many as 15% of hospice patients improve under their care.  My decision to utilize hospice care, and the resulting coordination between Richfield Retirement and Medi Hospice professionals, gave Mom the best Christmas gift, a graduation from hospice services.
