VDOT and BOS approved restricted tractor trailer traffic on Rt. 43 east of Buchanan
Tractor trailers, recreational buses and vehicles, and GPS advice was not recommended may be on future signs to keep long axel vehicles from getting stuck on Rt. 43 east of Buchanan and toward the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The recommended route through GPS would become US 220 alternate to Us 460 east and west in Bonsack. It adds 16 miles and 17 minutes to the trip.
23 trucks have been stuck on Rt. 43 by September this year alone. Most follow a GPs recommendation for the shortest route to US 460 and Montvale. VDOT beleives the problem has become significant enough to cause a restriction. Public Safety is the number one consideration.
“It is a tough road for a tractor driver to negotiate.” Mike Azart of VDOT. Maximum Penalty is a $250 fine for disobeying a public sign. However, the removal of the vehicle can go into the several thousands of dollars. “Trucks going to the quarry would not be restricted except as through traffic to Bedford. Bedford Co. has already approved the measure.
The measure was approved by the Board of Supervisors.
