Botetourt girls earn second highest girl scout award
Five Botetourt Girl Scouts Earn Their Silver Awards
Five members of Girl Scout Troop 3149, of Botetourt County, banded together to designed and landscaped the entrance of the League for Animal Protection in Fincastle. In doing so, Delaney Alls, Savannah Amos, Jamie LaPrade, Heather Royal and Josie Wiegandt have earned the Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve and the second highest award in Girl Scouting.
With the Silver Award, the project is just one facet of the comprehensive achievement program. The Girl Scout Silver Award represents a girl’s accomplishments in Girl Scouting and in her community as she grows and works to improve her life and the lives of others. The first four requirements of the Silver Award help girls build skills, explore careers, gain leadership skills, and make a commitment to self-improvement. When the first four requirements are completed, a girl may undertake the Silver Award community service project.
Troop 3149 wanted to give the League of Animal Protection (LAP) a real presence from the roadway. The entrance was overgrown and not noticeable. They made it attractive and inviting to passer-bys through landscape and signage enhancements. The girls would like to thank those who mentored and assisted them with this project: Pat Shaver with LAP for helping the troop define the project, and The Landscape Store in Cloverdale for helping the girls design the project and for donating materials.
All five girls have been in Girl Scouting together over the past eight years. Delaney Alls and Jamie LaPrade are eighth graders at Central Academy Middle School. Savannah Amos, Heather Royal and Josie Wiegandt are eighth graders at Read Mountain Middle School.
