State police detail car crash on Roanoke Road this afternoon

The Virginia State Police are continuing their investigation into a traffic crash that occurred this afternoon around 2:00 pm on Route 220 at Gravel Hill Road Botetourt County. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1998 Honda Civic was traveling westbound on Gravel Hill road towards Route 220 when the driver pulled out into the path of a southbound 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche striking it which then caused it to overturn and strike a tree.

The driver of the Honda, Tyler Croke, age 19, of Salem, Virginia was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash and was not injured. He was charged with failure to yield right of way.
The driver of the Avalanche Barry Chittum, age 60, of Covington, Virginia was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash and his front seat passenger Elta Chittum, age 61, of Covington, Virginia was also wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash. They were both injuried and transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
No further information regarding the crash is available at this time.
