The Friends of Rachel Club at Read Mountain Middle school recently sponsored a soup can drive. Students were challenged to bring in cans of soup and boxes of crackers, all to be donated to the League of Older Americans annual Soup for Seniors project. In a span of six days, the students collected 1,007 cans of soup, and 23 boxes of crackers.
Student volunteers would stack and count the soup each day. (Pictured are three volunteer counters: Ryan Deisher, Erin Oyler and Shane Gussler.) On Thursday, Feb. 7, Friends of Rachel Club members Sarah Latino, Bridgett Peeters, Lauren Foutz, Allyson McClellan, Yasmin Sykes, Cassandra Kuhn and Sophia Barranco met after school to sort and pack soups for delivery.
Parents Lynne Latino and Becky Foutz also helped out, along with sponsor teachers from the school, Liz Hogan, Heather Simmons, and Summer Underwood.
This is the second year that the F.O.R. club has spear-headed this drive. It is directly tied to the club’s mission of spreading kindness…not just in the school, but in the community around us.
