Terrific Tuesday: Embrace your smart phone!

Becky Lancense took this at the state wrestling tournament. Just after I finished the motions to the Y- M -C- A!
Hey it’s Terrific Tuesday again. How’s everything in your neck of the woods?
I very much enjoyed the state wrestling tournament over the week end. I put in a great number of hours which I am trying to burn. So forgive me for not being around much today. I want you to know that I was strutting Saturday night. I was the go to person for technology at the sports press table. I have grown so much since I left my other job. Though people in our IT department might not believe it, I do know a lot about outside access. On any given day I might access wireless in 3-4 different locations. I know what it is like to have Outlook problems and I know how to use a backdoor to get into a system. Which leads me into what you see happening on the blog yesterday and today.
If you hadn’t noticed, things they are a changin’ on Roanoke.com. for those of us already digital first it isn’t as same a big deal as it is to the main sheet. Change is good. I hope. We will soon see. Almost 1/5th of our online readers access us by mobile devices. Smart Phones, anyone?
What I know about technology is all of the catch phrases don’t mean a hill of beans if the equipment isn’t up to snuff. Young people have technology from preschool on. So there’s a gap between lets say early thirty somethings and early forty somethings in technology that is very much like a chasm. Boomers know nothing much at all unless they want to know about technology.
As for me, I feel sad for those who don’t get technology. So many folks I know don’t ever get on this blog or any blog. Matter of fact there are plenty of stubborn folks a out there refusing to even learn how to email. Just so you know, I took Greek in college (a nightmare I dreamed in Greek by the end of the class) and for those who don’t have hand held technology, it’s going to sound like I am speaking Greek.
I own a tablet thanks to my dear children who gave me a Samsung for Christmas. It is cool, but cumbersome. S’up with that? Most of my technology is in my hand and has been since late July. The young folks I know have technology in their hands, too. They text more than I do. I still like face time with people. But the left hand is addicted to holding the phone and even my 15 year old tells me to put the phone away.
A smart phone is a wondrous piece of equipment. If I were a rich girl I would own a Samsung Note. I own a Galaxy 2 now. I use Evernote a free app to take notes that I can send by email to myself and convert to a word doc. I never use a notebook/pen now unless my phone is low on juice. I spent an hour in the community room at the Salem Civic during the wrestling finals to charge my phone so I could take notes and pics. Didn’t even take the lap top into the building. I did everything from my phone or with my real camera. I use Dropbox another free app to store docs and also pics from my camera. Its a cloud type storage device. Fandango for movie listings is a free app. The joy of the Galaxy is the 8 mp camera. Most of you like the pic on our Botetourt View Facebook page . I also enjoy Tunein Radio another free app. I Skype by phone with my girl in Vermont. It is a sunrise pic from my camera phone. Another fav of mine while traveling? Waze will tell you where people spot police running radar and it’s a free app. I used it when I drove to Rural Retreat. It was right! My phone apps go on and on….
I tweet so follow me: catbe1 on Twitter. I am on Instagram at cathyb830. Pinterest– the greatest waste of time since YouTube– you can follow me: catbe1 Cathy Benson. I love it! I am on Google + but honestly Facebook is so much more fun. Facebook me personally– friend Cathy Benson. Be sure to like the Botetourt View Facebook page. I don’t Spotify much, but have it on my to do list.
Embrace technology! “τα λέμε αργότερα γραπτή” See you later in Greek!

Glad we got you back up and runnin’! Ha
