Trent Smith, a 2013 graduate of James River High School, joins six other Botetourt County graduates who are members of the James Madison University Marching Royal Dukes. As mentioned in a previous story, the MRD have a strong tradition as one of America’s premier collegiate marching bands. Trent started the band program in the sixth grade, and continued throughout high school, under the direction of Will Divers.
I think it’s a great reflection, not only on Mr. Caldwell and Mr. Divers, but also on the commitment the county has made to the fine arts programs in the schools, that our graduates continue to participate in these sorts of activities at the college level.
Trent is pictured with his brother Wyatt before a recent football game. He is the third generation in our family to attend Madison — his great-aunt Irene Reynolds Tucker graduated from Madison College in 1949!
