LBHS Key Club and Kiwanis sponsored Recycling coming soon!

If you have unused electronic devices and personal records taking up space but you have no idea of how to get rid of them properly, help is on the way.

A free electronic recycling and personal document destruction event will occur Saturday, April 30th from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm on the driving range/south parking lot at LBHS.

There you can safely dispose of your personal documents such as taxes, medical records or old checks. Underwritten by Bank of Botetourt and The Bank of Fincastle, a document shredding truck will be on site where you can watch your records being destroyed without any concern of anyone being able to use them for identity theft. This service is available for personal or household records only; records of a business or commercial enterprise will not be accepted. The on-site shredding service is provided by H&R Contractors, Inc.

You also can safely dispose of electronic devices such as computer components, telephones, VCR’s, microwave ovens, small appliances and TV’s. Scott Recycling LLC will assure that any and all information on hard drives will be drilled through and the hard drive will be destroyed. White goods such as refrigerators, freezers, washers and dryers, dishwashers cannot be accepted.

The response at the first of these events at LBHS last November was overwhelming.. Approximately 147 vehicles from 15 different zip codes utilized the drive through convenience to dispose of 2,860 pounds of documents and 11,479 pounds of electronic equipment. An official of the document shredder company commented that it was “…the most paper I have seen at one of these events.”

This free event is a community service project of the Key Club of Lord Botetourt High School and the Kiwanis Club of Botetourt County.

Bank of Botetourt visited legislators on Bank Day in Richmond

Close to 350 bankers from all over Virginia made their presence known at the General Assembly last week at the VBA’s annual Banker Day event. Bank of Botetourt was represented by 6 employees: Watts Steger, Jennifer Theimer, Andy Shotwell, Paul Murphy, Cari Humphries and Tina Simpson. This year’s record attendance number clearly demonstrates that Virginia bankers are engaged and understand the importance of a strong grassroots effort as the 2011 General Assembly session begins. Led by VBA Chairman Charley Majors and VBA Government Relations Committee Chairman Chris Bergstrom, the day started with a greeting by House Speaker William J. Howell and a briefing by VBA staff. Bankers then met with their state legislators throughout the morning. Bank of Botetourt staffers met with Bill Cleaveland, Ralph Smith and Lacey Putney. The luncheon featured a discussion with Governor McDonnell, who provided a timely and insightful update on key issues before the General Assembly. Both legislators and lobbyists from other industries took note of the significant banker turnout at this key event.

Photos from James River After Prom

James River After Prom was a Mardi Gras theme. Parents and other volunteers worked diligently on Friday night and during the day on Saturday to decorate the school for the annual party. Students and parents and volunteers stayed up til after 4 a.m. playing games and winning prizes. On Sunday, the decorations came down in about two and a half hours. This morning the school once again looks like James River High School.

Looking for the paparazzi photos from James River prom? We’ll be putting those up sometime this afternoon. Do you have photos from either James River or Lord Botetourt prom? You can share at news@botetourtview.com.

Action photos of LBHS students Turner and McBane in the Blue Ridge marathon

Dylan Turner and Michael McBane of LBHS both have proud mothers in Lori Turner and Jennifer McBane who were happy to supply photos of Saturday April 24th’s Blue Ridge Marathon. The boys were the two youngest official runners and finished  first and third in their age divisions and 43rd for Dylan and 50th for Michael over all. Neither young man had ever run 26.2 miles all at once and considering the difficulty of the altitude climb in the marathon they really rocked and rolled! Both finished under four hours.

Lori Turner had this to say

“I just wanted to reemphasize that Peter Walton, L.B. track coach and running mentor, spent the day on his bike moving to different locations to support the boys and keep them focused as they ran the marathon. He has been a constant support and influence in preparing them and seeing them to the finish line!”

She added:” After a successful run, Dylan donned a tux and escorted his date to the LB prom. It was a great day and these boys have much to be proud of!”

We had a previous story.

Your online guide to the Sept. 25 issue of The Botetourt View

There are lots and lots of rec league games going on each weekend in Botetourt (and some weekdays, too.) Goodness knows, we can’t be at all of them. So how do we decide which ones to drop in on with our roving camera?

We use a very scientific method. Sometimes, yes, we go by the team names.

So when we spotted a match-up on the schedule between one girls soccer team named the Storm and another named Category 5 — as in a Category 5 hurricane — well, we just couldn’t resist that one.

You’ll find photos of that game in this week’s print edition of The Botetourt View — and you’ll find the entire photo shoot from the game online in this gallery.

Those are just some of this week’s online extras. But before we get to the rest, well, like we said, we can’t be everywhere. But you can be! So if you have photos of your favorite rec league team, send ‘em on to us. We’d love to help you show them off!

And now, the other online extras of the week:

* Three Lord Botetourt students hurt in wreck in Salem
* Spaghetti dinner to benefit Amanda Petty on Oct. 17
Paparazzi photos of Botetourt people at Greek Festival

* “Mommy and Me” classes begin Oct. 15.
* More photos from the Heritage Days festival in Fincastle
* More photos of the James River and Lord Botetourt bands
* More from Lin-Z-Jack’s Hot Dog Shack
* More photos of ZZ Top fans
* More paparazzi photos from Olde Salem Days

AND IN SPORTS . . .
* More photos from Knights Crossing cross country
* Photos of Lord Botetourt volleyball
* Photos of Flyboys vs. Cobras soccer
* Photos of Botetourt Wasps football team
* Swimming lessons for children begin Oct. 27
