Ashlie Caldwell from Blue Ridge, Va. concluded her 2013 soccer season with the Emory & Henry Women’s soccer team on October 29 with a match against Hollins University that ended in a tie after 110 minutes of play.
The coaches’ poll for the 2013 season predicted the Emory & Henry Women’s soccer would finish ninth out of the in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and that prediction was correct. The Wasps finished the season with a record of 4-12-2. All four of the ladies’ wins and both of their tied games were against Old Dominion Athletic Conference competitors.
Emory & Henry Women’s soccer began the season on the road at the Swat Kick Classic on August 31. The Wasps started off the season with a losing streak, which was ended when they picked up a dramatic 1-0 win over ODAC competitor Sweet Briar College. The game against Sweet Briar went into double overtime, and with just 1:51 left the Wasps scored.
The 2013 squad had fifteen returning players and welcomed nine freshmen. This was Head Coach Linda Schirmeister-Gess’ second season with the Wasps.
Two of Emory & Henry’s players were selected for the All-ODAC Third Team. Junior, Erica Merriman, and freshman, Willow Hubbard were awarded this honor. This is the first time since 2006 that a member of the E&H women’s soccer team was named to an All-ODAC team.
The Wasps played a tough schedule this season. They faced two teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
