It still has the character of an old school with high ceilings and wainscoting and oiled wood floors, but it is really quite functional and kept very clean. The Lauderdale Community House Committee that overseas the property includes: Chip Lawrence, Charlie Provost, Rose Marie Cox, Bobby Loope and Larry Eggers. They sincerely are trying to keep new life coming into the building. Once home to a 4H Club and a Ruritan Club, both defunct, the committee is hoping other groups will want to use the building. “Non profits would not have to pay for the rental, said Larry Eggers. It has been away from its owner since 1944. the late Albert Johnson of Eagle Rock was a member of the Army Air Force in WWII and he loaned the hat to Vernon McCombs back in 1944 when they were stationed at Tinker Field in Oklahoma before they shipped out. McCombs borrowed the official dress hat to travel home to Enville, Tennessee to see his wife and newborn daughter. He returned to Enville after the war and has spent his life there. Some how the hat got misplaced and 60 years have passed before it was found again. Steve Vaughn the postmaster at Eagle Rock post office received a call from the post master of the Enville post office, Judy Robertson contacted him trying to see if he knew Albert Johnson. Like most local post masters’ Vaughn was aware that Johnson had passed away but suggested that McCombs send the hat to his daughter, Brenda Dooley who still lives in Eagle Rock. McCombs was saddened to hear that Johnson was dead. McCombs lost his wife on Memorial Day and because he has been cleaning out the attic, a helper found the hat and that find is what prompted him to try to return it to Johnson. “We ended up on a B-29 crew in the Pacific on Saipan. I was an air craft engine man. You know those big bombers like the ones that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.” “We were in the 20th Air Force.” said McCombs. He is contacting his daughter to send him a picture of him holding her and he is wearing Johnson’s hat looking like one of the millions of young military men America produced in WWII. He includes his military buddy Albert Johnson in that group of heroes that served their country. Next week we will run a photo of McCombs and the hat that he is sending via mail.
