Schedule pick-up continues on August 11

straubandfriendsblog.JPG
Schedules were presented for pick-up by the two high schools on August 7 and 11. Seniors Emory Straub, Jonathan Fralin and Rick Alderman picked up their final high school year’s schedules, paid fees and just hung out with friends at Lord Botetourt on Thursday, August 7. Over at James River, Sophomore Hailey Baker and her mother Julie Baker tallied up fees, passes and other assorted costs associated with “Back to High School.” All in all the students seemed ready to get back to school and friends, but maybe not the homework! School begins on August 20.

Colonial Back to School business night is August 14

The information on the Back to School business night at Colonial Elementary School in the August 8 edition of the Botetourt View is incorrect. The Back to School business night at Colonial is on the August 14, not August 18, between 12p.m.-8 p.m. at the school."Parents and students may pay fees, fund lunch accounts, discover transportation schedules, join the PTA, find out who their teachers are all set in the school auditorium," said Principal Tammy Riggs. She also said, "First grade will have an orientation meeting on Monday, August 18th."

Sixth graders must have a TDAP shot before school starts

tdapboosterblog.JPG
Time is fleeting and sixth graders must have the Tdap shot by the first day of school in order to enter either Central Academy Middle School or Read Mountain Middle School. Proof of vaccination must be on file prior to the student's entry in to school.

What is Tdap?
Beginning in 2006, students entering the 6th grade are required to have one dose of Tetanus, Diphtheria, Acellular Pertussis vaccine (Tdap), the first pertussis containing vaccine recommended for adolescents; achieving high coverage levels should reduce the number and size of school based outbreaks of pertussis (Whooping Cough) disease.
Summer break is almost and students just like these face problems going back to school without a Tdap shot prior to entering the 6th grade.

"Only two reasons can keep a child exempt, one is a religious exemption and the other is if a Doctor signs a note saying a child is not old enough, other wise the child should have the immunization and the form brought to the school prior to the first day." said Donna Price, guidance counselor at Read Mountain Middle School.

Have you waited a long time and now your child needs to get the Tdap booster prior to August 20? If you haven't time to schedule a doctor's appointment, then the Botetourt County Public Health Department is offering the shot on August 7 and 14 by appointment only. Remember, by state law every entering 6th grader must have the immunization before they can go to middle school. For an appointment, call 473-8240.

School Board Meeting is full of details, including a proposed new capital reserve fund

mikescottblog.JPG
Perhaps the most significant item the board voted upon is to ask the county to create a school division capital reserve fund. That is per approval next week in the regular board of supervisors meeting on July 22, and with it will come the request to have $1,191,350 of leftover funds from the past year re-appropriated to the fund to be held by the county for the school division upon the supervisor's approval to create the fund. The school board would have to request any of the funds from the supervisors over time when and if the need arises, said School Superintendent Dr. Tony Brads.

Technology coordinator Mike Scott tells board members about the Internet safety policy they later approved.

Kolb going to Green Bank to search for pulsars

kolbblog.JPG

Barbara Kolb who teaches science at James River High School, will be going this summer to participate in the Pulsar Collaborative Search from July 6 through July 25 at Green Bank, West Virginia at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.

The search for pulsars is an entirely new project and the group will be looking for Pulsars through out the universe, said Kolb. "In a way," said Kolb, "this is mapping the universe using our listening devices."

For the first time, teachers from out of state have been allowed to apply for summer opportunities. She will be accompanied the last week of her stay by three James River High School Students, David Bordette, Trent Jolin and Casey Thompson.

The West Virginia University team working on the project describe a pulsar as,"a highly magnetized, rapidly rotating neutron star. Weighing more than our Sun, yet only 20 km in diameter, these incredibly dense objects produce radio beams that sweep the sky like a lighthouse. Since their discovery in 1967, over 1700 pulsars have been found, and they provide a wealth of information about neutron star physics, general relativity, the Galactic gravitational potential and magnetic field, the interstellar medium, celestial mechanics, planetary physics and even cosmology."

Students go to enrichment classes

Censorshipblog.JPG

Classes were held this week at Read Mountain Middle School and ranged from Art to Spanish to Science to governmental law and a trip to the Chesapeake Bay for one group, but for the gifted and talented middle school students, it was fun to be back in school! One group tackled Censorship and the Internet.

Karen Busher's class explored censorship and the Internet. Each student was given the opportunity to formulate an opinion on some of the content on the Internet that lawmakers and others have said should not be allowed.

They looked at different sources finding Wikipedia to be an unreliable source of information. Because of their youth the know that the Internet can be a potentially dangerous and terrifying place for children who get into websites and chat rooms that are hurtful in their approach to children.

Reading programs very different between the high schools

readingblog.JPG

While James River High School students read "Rocket Boys" by Homer Hickam, technology oriented Lord Botetourt will have high school students reading on the web every thing from safety instructions to English assignments.

The block schedule presented a summer reading dilemma, said Dr. Joni Poff who is supervisor for secondary instruction. She said they think they have come up with satisfactory reading programs for the summer on the high school level.

Jane tells us: "Music, Drama and Visual Arts were showcased three different ways. Artwork from PTA-sponsored art class for children in grades K-2 was proudly displayed for all to admire. Shown here are the musical and dramatic components with the fourth grade performing a concert on recorders and the Drama Club getting silly after their hilarious performance of Little Red Writing Hood. Many thanks to the Drama Club sponsor, Kim Trask, music teacher and chorus sponsor, Beth Radford and K-2 art teachers Carla McCabe and Lee Pembroke. Kudos to all the parents and volunteers who made this fantastic event possible."

Greenfield Montessori School will not open

Robin Boling, the director of the school, says in an e-mail that the Montessori school will not be opening as planned.

Boling says: "We are saddened to announce that Greenfield Montessori School will not be opening. We have recently contacted the enrolled families of the program via phone and email. All the families that have paid registration fees and/or tuition will receive a full refund. As for the reasons that the school is not opening, all that can be commented on at this time is that it is an unfortunate situation that will hopefully be settled amicably between the parties involved."

The school's sign had been removed and the building shut-up in the last ten days following the re-roofing of the building located on the Roanoke Road near the Amsterdam and Ashley Plantation areas. The Botetourt View called Boling to find out what had happened and got the response above by e-mail.
