She is the first athlete in the 49 year history of the school to have a jersey retired. Coach John Shotwell, Athletic Director Sheila Proffit and Principal Jamie Talbott accompanied Tincher at half time to the center of the field. "Thank you for your support," said Tincher. "You were great when I was here at James River and through out my career at Virginia Tech." Tincher was the NCAA softball player of the year in 2008 and an academic All-American. Forecast for tonight's games (and other info)Looks like there's a chance both Lord Botetourt and James River will be playing football in some rain tonight -- Lord Botetourt at Hidden Valley and James River at home against Altavista. Over on Kevin Myatt's Weather Journal, Kevin says the forecast calls for some rain tonight and Saturday. You might want to keep an eye on the skies -- and Kevin's blog -- and take an umbrella or poncho just in case. Unfortunately, the Lord Botetourt junior varsity didn't fare so well. They lost the first game 19-25, then came back with strong passing to win 25-19, forcing a third and deciding game in which they came up short. Nevertheless, we have some nice photos of the JV team in action. They were taken by a Cave Spring parent (Quigg Lawrence), but you can still see some of the Lord Botetourt players (in red, of course). James River volleyball JVs defeat Floyd County![]() For the second time this season, the James River junior varsity volleyball team has defeated Floyd County. The scores were 25-13 and 25-16. This raises the junior varsity record to 3-1. The Knights dropped their opener against Auburn, but then came back with wins over Floyd and Alleghany -- and then Floyd again. Look at the big one that did not get away!Amanda Caldwell of Eagle Rock caught this huge rainbow trout in Bedford at Rock Hollow Farm. It weighed five pounds and measured 25 inches! Amanda is a Central Academy Middle School 6th grader from Eagle Rock. She is the daughter of Kathy and Jerry Caldwell. If so, you can share them at news@botetourtview.com Read Mountain football team defeats Clifton ForgeThe Read Mountain Middle School football team opened the season with a 28 - 0 victory against Clifton Forge on Thursday, August 28. Scoring for the Starz were Thomas Kennedy, Nick Webb, DeRell Stone and Aaron Gunter. The defensive unit played a strong game led by linebackers Thomas Kennedy and Andrew Williams. Alex Hampton added an interception for the Starz defense. The Starz special teams returned a punt inside Clifton Forge territory setting up a touchdown in the second quarter. At the start of the second half, Aaron Gunter took advantage of solid blocking by Hunter Santos and the kick return team and took the kickoff the distance to put the Starz in control of the game. Read Mountain volleyball team defeats Cave SpringThe Lady Starz volleyball team won at home Thursday, August 28 against the Squires of Cave Spring taking 3 out of 4 games. It was an exciting game as the ladies battled their way to this victory with team work and determination. Leading the team in scoring were Kristen Toppel with 14 points and Rachel Parker with 8. A huge congratulations goes out to Mary Joan Haislip, Brooke Fuhrey, Rachel Parker, and Carrie Heldreth for getting their footwork down and getting some historical blocks for the Starz. Theimer scores a TD for the Knights The Knights won 19-12. The Celtics were powerful in the 2nd quarter but otherwise looked lackluster during the game. River struggled with PAT's getting one of three, but otherwise moved the ball well. Eric Theimer and QB Jordan Talbott looked especially tough on offense. Cheve Tolbert on defense was a mighty man against the Celtics.The Knights will have another home game next Friday night. They played Friday afternoon before the varsity game between James River and Roanoke Catholic. They looked awesome in the hot humid afternoon-- completely dominating play. The sports pages of this morning's Roanoke Times tell us the varsity team won three games to none. Now we can report the junior varsity team won, as well -- 25-18, and 25-22 James River is in action next on Tuesday -- at home against the Floyd team the Knights defeated last week. August 28, 2008Spooky Crawford Memorial golf tourney set for Sept. 18The 3rd Annual Spooky Crawford Golf Tournament is scheduled for September 18 to fund scholarships for children and teens to participate in sports. Registration for the Captain's Choice event begins at 11:30 a.m.followed by lunch at 12 noon and Shot gun start at 1 p.m. A 50/50, mulligans, red tees and door prizes are featured along with the longest putt, closest to the pin, longest drive and for a hole-in-one-- Magic City Ford will donate a car! The late, Paul "Spooky" Crawford of Cloverdale is remembered for his business-- High Country Construction-- and his fun loving nature which included a great fondness for children. "He could be a kid himself," said his widow Lisa Crawford with a laugh. After his death in May of 2005, Crawford's widow Lisa and friends established a Golf tournament to raise funds so needy children could participate in athletics be it cheerleading, gymnastics or travel and recreation sports. Crawford played football and was an accomplished gymnast. The scholarships have amounted to over $5,000 for the past two years and most of the funds are raised at the annual golf tournament at Ashley Plantation. "We have had a couple of kids who could not have participated in our gymnastics program had it not been for the Spooky Crawford scholarship." said Susan Powers of Botetourt Gymnastics Academy.
