NIU will tear it down

Northern Illinois University plans to tear down Cole Hall, where a former student killed five NIU students and then killed himself. Va. Tech decided not to tear down Norris Hall, the scene of most of the killing done the Tech campus on April 16, 2007.
At least one person who commented on the Chronicle of Higher Education story about NIU's decision noticed the difference in approaches -- as you can see on this blog. The New York Times has a story about it, too.

Wrong response, and wrong message. But hey, it's their building and their money.

I just hope there were already strong structural and/or renovations plans already in the works, and this was just a minor consideration and tipped the scale.

  • Online forum to talk about campus security -

    The day after holding a statewide conference on campus security, Gov. Tim Kaine's office announced the creation of a web site where "members of the Virginia college community," can discuss campus security.

    Go here for more information and to register to have access to the site.

    The governor's panel on the Virginia Tech shootings is expected to release a fairly thick report on the work it's done this summer in the next week or two and Tech's own internal review is also scheduled for completion soon.

    Security is one of many topics expected to be covered in those reports. This forum seems to be an attempt to keep the conversation fluid and share information more between universities.
