September 27, 2007Computer club tries "nerd auction"A computer club at Washington State University has come up with an interesting idea to increase female enrollment in their field, and maybe play the field. Listen close, Virginia Tech engineers ... The Linux Users Group is looking to hold a “nerd auction,” in which members will offer their computer prowess to sorority students in exchange for a makeover, and maybe a date. None of the school’s sororities has taken the bait yet, but Ben Ford, the group’s president is still holding out. Ford got some help with the idea. A public relations class took on the concept as a project last semester after the Computer Science department asked the group to help boost female enrollment. The class suggested the self-professed nerds needed a new image, and the sorority girl target audience. "Our conclusion was that they need to promote themselves better, then specific ideas were presented to them," professor Moon Lee, who taught the public relations class, told the Associated Press. "They made suggestions to work with specific groups such as sororities. Sorority groups tend to have a very good social network." |
