February 25, 2008Hokie Cheer competitionIf the beach, tanned bodies and blaring sun of Panama gets too much for you during Spring Break, bust out the video camera and create a cheer for the Hokies. Starting March 10 (the day Spring Break ends), Hokie fans will be able to submit their homemade cheers to a YouTube group for a chance to have that cheer featured at football games in the fall. A panel of students will choose winners and award them prizes. Those winners are slated to be picked by April 19, in time for the spring football game. Ultimately, Virginia Tech's athletic committee, including Athletic Director Jim Weaver, will review the top entries. And, if they fit the "Hokie Respect," campaign and can be conform with the band and cheerleaders, a new Hokie Chant could be born. The cheers must be original and refrain from vulgarity. Pretty much anything that wouldn't violate the Hokies Respect policy. The plans for a Hokie Cheer competition stemmed from graduate student Ken Stanton. He represents the Athletic Committee on the Graduate Student Alliance and last year helped spearhead a group against the banning of the Stick it in Cheer. When he first discussed the competition last year, Stanton said he wanted to find a cheer that is unique Virginia Tech. The new cheers would "enrich Hokie Spirit for sporting events," he said. "It’s not just about getting more cheers or because we have a lack of cheers. It’s just to enrich the experience and to get more fan involvement at games." So, get out the pom-poms. We'll keep you posted with details like where to send the videos when that information is decided. |
