Recruit picks Hokies

Norcom High School standout Dorian Finney-Smith of Portsmouth committed to Virginia Tech today, according to the Virginian-Pilot.

Finney-Smith, a 6-foot-7 forward, chose the Hokies over Florida, Old Dominion, Virginia and Maryland.

He  is one of the nation’s top prospects in the Class of 2011. He’s ranked No. 13 by ESPN, No. 25 by MaxPreps, No. 28 by Scout and No. 37 by Rivals.

Finney-Smith said he wanted to make his decision before his senior season began and didn’t want it to be a last-minute decision.

Last season he averaged 19.7 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks to help lead the Greyhounds to the Group AAA title.

He was named the Associated Press Group AAA Boys Basketball Player of the Year, the Virginia High School Coaches Association State Player of the Year and the All-Tidewater Player of the Year. He also was named to the ESPN RISE All-American team.

    Mr. Berman,

He is ranked 15th from ESPN, not 13th!!!!!! Get it right. Don’t have errors like this!

“Five-star SF Dorian Finney-Smith (Portsmouth, Va./Norcom) has committed to the Virginia Tech Hokies, and the No. 15-ranked overall player in the 2011 class instantly becomes coach Seth Greenberg’s highest-rated recruit since he took over the job in 2003.”

He said he wanted to play in the ACC, this kid would have went to UVA if John T Casteen had not helped VT get in the ACC. In helping VT, Casteen has hurt UVA.

Greenberg continues to elevate the Hokie program in every way. Better recruits annually, and vastly improved production on the court. All of this while holding the players accountable for all their actions off the court, too. There are a lot of fine young men on the team, and I am referencing the demeanor on campus & in the classroom.

Sometimes it seems people take for granted just how much VT has improved its basketball program. Here’s hoping Greenberg is around for a long time. Best wishes to DFS & the Hokies…

Good job coach Greenberg! Getting a big recruit like this along with others will continue to move the Hokies in the right direction.

That info on No. 13 came from the Virginian-Pilot, not me. Did not know it was wrong.

Perhaps then you’ll take the due diligence to check the numbers next time?

Robert, VT got in the ACC because of Mark Warner, not casteen.

Ranked 13th or 15th, the difference is minimal and trivial. It was a great ‘get’ for Greenberg – which is the real central point.

As for Robert remaining unhinged about VT being an ACC member, that is just downright funny. Talk about obsession, how long has it been, six years or something like that?

Way to go coach Greenberg. That sucking sound is UVA FAN Robert~s head imploding.lol get a life Robert! Hokies are going to dominate Hoos in both major sports .Get use to it!

Going to dominate the Hoos in both major sports? Maybe in basketball (Thanks to Casteen & having lower STANDARDS) But in football UVA has something going for it, we don’t have a OC named STINEY. I have never seen someone who has under performed as him. He’s been blessed with great talent at the skilled positions and yet he never finishes in the top 60 offenses in the nation. We want you to keep STINEY every bit as much as you wanted us to keep Groh. With you having STINEY, I don’t believe your going to dominate us in football with our new coach!
