Hokies lose in OT

Mark Berman back at Cassell, where Virginia Tech’s season ended with a 79-76 OT loss to Wichita St. in the second round of the NIT.

The Hokies played the final 4:36 of regulation and all of OT without either Jeff Allen (Fouled out) or Victor Davila (injury).

With VT down 78-76, Paul Debnam inbounded the ball with 2.6 seconds left. It looked like Malcolm Delaney, dribbling the ball nearĀ the scorers’ tableĀ as he tried to get near midcourt, might have been fouled by Toure Murry. But the official instead ruled that Delaney had stepped out of bounds, ending the Hokies’ season and Delaney’s college career.

More later.

Let me see. Wichita State beats Tech on its home court and VCU beats Wichita State on its home court. So who belongs in the NCAA and who belongs in the NIT

  2. Tony | March 20, 2011 at 4:29 pm

Comparing scores has NO meaning, the Hokies need to schedule VCU and show them who is better.

  3. NewTech Fan | March 20, 2011 at 4:56 pm

Garmen……who cares now…thats in the past buddy. Take your UVA attitude and post it somewhere where people care like the Daily Progress. I didnt see VCU play the likes of Duke,UNC,Fla ST. If refs made calls correct you would not be saying this. Bunch of crap refs.

  4. cws260 | March 20, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Garmen, Let’s see VCU full bench, VT having to play a walk on. Geez it must suck worrying about VT loosing because your own team is, well irrevelant.

  5. cws260 | March 20, 2011 at 5:27 pm

    Typo. That would be “irrelevant”.

  6. Otis | March 20, 2011 at 5:54 pm

Stop losing twice to irrelevant teams and you wouldn’t be in the NIT.

  7. garmen | March 20, 2011 at 6:01 pm

I am not a UVA fan. I support all basketball teams from the state of Virginia. I am merely stating a fact. Comparative scores do make a difference and if VT had taken care of business, they would have been in the NCAA. I too believe that VT should have been in the NCAA, but I am making a point that all of the VT fans are condemning VCU. Too bad that most of the ugly fans of some teams make it bad for other state teams. I would have liked to have seen all of the Division I teams make the big dance. If you want to complain, ask how the Big East got in 11 including Villanova that lost 7 straight. I would like to see VT and UVA go and play at the Robbins Center and Siegel Center. The big boys only want to play at home.

  8. garmen | March 20, 2011 at 6:04 pm

I am not a UVA fan, I am a fan of all state basketball teams and want them all to be successful. Comparative scores do count when the committee looks at schedules. I too would like to see VT and UVA schedule teams like VCU, Richmond, Old Dominion and George Mason. But make it a home and home series, not a home series all the time. And if you want to complain, talk about the “Big Least” getting in 11 teams. Do you really think Villanova deserved a bid? What a joke and if Old Dominion had been a little better, they might be in the Sweet 16. As for the bench, that is part of the game. Injuries happen, suspensions are brought on by the players themselves.

  9. Robert | March 20, 2011 at 6:05 pm

VT really showed the ncaa made a mistake by not giving them a invitation to the ncaa tournament, didn’t they? Heck they can’t even get past the second round of the NIT tournament when their playing at HOME for the 3rd or 4th year in a row! Meanwhile VCU is making a run on a national championship (Something VT wouldn’t be doing) Greenberg does not want to play VCU because VCU would show everyone who is better. Bandwagon, I mean NewTechFan, suffers from paranoidism. To him there is a conspiracy against VT and everytime VT loses its because of the officiating. What a classless act!

  10. forever a fan | March 20, 2011 at 6:32 pm

2-0 against tech this year, no wonder UVA is irrelevant.

  11. Shark | March 20, 2011 at 6:54 pm

NTF, How does your NIT bracket look now? I bet it smells “BURNT” like your Wal-Mart popcorn! Ha!Ha! The conspiracy is finally over, thank goodness!

  12. NewTech Fan | March 20, 2011 at 6:57 pm

Robert if you was there you would have seen Tech getting screwed yet again. You just cant see correctly thru your rose colored UVA blue glasses you wear. I know you can sit here jump off the UVA wagon. Sounds like you have to VCU….MOVE TO RICHMOND….enjoy that crimeless living…oh wait that is one of the worst areas in the nation. Just be proud wear your GO RAMS new bought shirt ….sit down and shut up!

  13. Willis | March 20, 2011 at 7:13 pm

Thank goodness the long national nightmare that is Virginia Tech men’s basketball is now over.

  14. Shark | March 20, 2011 at 7:32 pm

NTF…you have to be a girl! Quit whining!,

  15. Otis | March 20, 2011 at 7:41 pm

With this loss, I’m beginning to think that someone in charge of the NIT has an agenda against Virginia Tech.

  16. John | March 20, 2011 at 8:06 pm

I am a UVA fan and I was at the game today. The officating was bad on both sides of the ball. The reason Tech lost was Allen simple as that. The final foul on him was a bad call, but he should have never put himself in that posistion to begin with. Early on in the game Davila went up for a missed dunk and reinjured his shoulder Delaney came over and said coach we gotta get him out. Greenberg then turned to his assistants and knew he had no-one else. Having to play a walk-on for the last part of the game is only a product of injuries and poor recruiting. Tech played a season where they should have been in the NCAA’s but make no mistake they are a one and done team.

  17. Tony | March 20, 2011 at 9:36 pm

It is funny to read the comments of the hoo fans on here. Since they are not a player in basketball or football in the ACC, they stir up a smoke screen to hide their shortcomings. I guess the rowing season is their “big” time of the year. Row, row, row your boat …………..so on and so on …………..

  18. NewTech Fan | March 20, 2011 at 10:09 pm

Shark u always come around after a loss…..where are you other-wise. By the way this man is 6’3″…255# so anytime small fry, we will call you guppy from now on.

  19. NewTech Fan | March 20, 2011 at 10:12 pm

John did you show your team loyality at the game?…….I guess you wanted to see a real team play in the postseason..good for you.

  20. John | March 21, 2011 at 1:30 pm

Wichita State beat us in the regular season out in Maui, so I wanted to see what they were about. As for showing my team loyalty, yeah I wore my UVA shirt to the game but I did not root aginst either team. As for a “real team” playing in the postseason congrats to you guys. The Cavs had offers to play in both the CBI and CIT but turned them down. We lost our best player for the year and started 3 freshman and still managed to beat the “real team” not once but twice this year. Im not for bashing Tech at all it (had) a good team the past couple of years but lets be honest Tech fans….. What are you gonna do now with no Delany and Allen how many games do u really think your gonna win. Who do you have now thats a game changer, where are your points gonna come from. You talk about UVA not making the postseason well we are on the way up and you guys on the other hand are going to the cellar.

  21. Shark | March 21, 2011 at 6:38 pm

NTF, OH! WOW! Never seen a 6’3″ 255 lb. “CRY BABY in a diaper, probably wet all the time from tears after watching your Chokies loose once again. WAH! WAH! WAH!

  22. NewTech Fan | March 25, 2011 at 8:23 am

Guppy/shark….why do you run that mouth so much….talk is cheap. I believe that I see my team win 3xs more than yours?. Guess thats why you live in the sea from all the crying you do.

  23. Shark | March 26, 2011 at 10:13 pm

NTF, Rem: your quote you couldn’t wait for Chokie baseball to start ,ACC record 0 wins and 8 losses, Ouch! NTF= (Not To Funny) is it? Using your math 3xs 0 = 0 Wah! Wah! Wah!

  24. NewTech Fan | March 28, 2011 at 9:38 pm

Be proud there DEbbie Ryan pushouts=a classy lady throw out the door like garabage. UVA will never be a powerhouse team….ever

  25. Shark | April 1, 2011 at 9:23 pm

NTF=New Techneck Fan, I wouldn’t talk much about push outs rem: Bonnie Hendrickson a real class act and a excellent coach. I wouldn’t say much about VCU and crime with what’s been going on lately in Hokie land! Almost forgot about your glass house, Bad Call! Wah! Wah! Wah!

Almost forgot, your new women’s B-ball coach a Seth clone get your bracket and still empty trophy case ready, WNIT here you come! Power House! Ha! Ha!

  26. markberman | April 2, 2011 at 2:30 pm

Just a couple things for future reference: it is Henrickson, not Hendrickson. And she was hardly pushed out the door. She left of her own choosing, for a much higher-paying job at Kansas. You cannot equate her departure with Debbie Ryan’s at all. Henrickson had put her team in the NCAAs yet again when she left — for a better job. She was a hot commodity that kept getting schools wanting to interview her for their vacancies. Whereas Ryan was shown the door with her program on the decline.

  27. richard h | April 2, 2011 at 4:08 pm

Well tell me then.. how is it that she is such a hot commodity if she couldnt get it done at Tech? She was an average coach with a losing record. She by no means was anywhere near the person Debbie Ryan is. It looks like she saw the hand writing on the wall and bolted before she was going to be fired. No great loss for Tech.

  28. Shark | April 2, 2011 at 4:33 pm

Mark, Sorry about the mistake on spelling. Did Weaver really try to keep Bonnie? Still don’t understand how she could leave a powehouse B-ball school like VT.

  29. markberman | April 2, 2011 at 4:45 pm

I think you’re confusing Henrickson with her successor, Beth Dunkenberger. Dunkenberger is the one who was fired by Tech for her lack of success. Henrickson was 158-62 in her Tech career, with seven postseason appearances in her seven seasons. That is why she was a hot commodity. Henrickson got it done at Tech. You are confusing her with Dunkenberger.

  30. abdnva | April 5, 2011 at 6:08 pm

No, Mark, he’s not confusing her at all. He’s just being a typical wahoo jerk. He likes to ignore his loser MBB team, and his loser football team, so he can focus on lacrosse, field hockey, and other invisible sports with limited participation where the hoo’s can suceed.

  31. Shark | April 5, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Abdnva, I know it must really bother you about UVa’s success in other sports programs when you only have one that has any success at all. Never being ranked #1 in any sport (now that’s INVISIBLE). That must really eat at you.

Ooops, Almost forgot, Tech Nechs did celebrate winning the 2007 Bass Fishing Championship. At least you have 1 in that NC trophy case, now that’s “confusiing”. You’re a typical CHOKIE fan you only pull for the teams that win and the others don’t exist! Better go now I might have a bite, Ha! Ha!

  32. Shark | April 6, 2011 at 6:21 pm

Abdnva, Just had to bring this up to you, did you see this past weekends Baseball scores out of B-burg? UVA 3 wins Chokies 0 total scores Hoo’s 37 runs VT 8 “OUCH! I know you will try to “IGNORE” this sport because it is your 4th team sport behind Bass Fishing, Football, Basketball, all are scholarship sports how sad for you!
