More on Hokies’ win

Here is more of what Seth Greenberg had to say about the win:

“They showed great resiliency. They showed some toughness. I’m not saying we were great on the defensive end. They were very smart. They wore us down in terms of making us guard for long  periods of time. We didn’t do a very good job guarding that spread ball screen. We didn’t force a skip because the guys were so worried about giving up 3s. We gave up six or eight points in the first half just by being careless but we stayed with it and made some plays — maybe some plays that we haven’t made when you think about Florida State, you think about Minnesota. .. They found a way to win a close game so maybe we can build on it.:

Seth on the final play where Green drove, passsed to Brown and Finney-Smith got the tip in off Brown’s missed trey: “I was surprised he gave it up (to Brown). When he kicked  it out, … they went to close out, which opened up the floor, which gave Dorian an angle to get to the glass. He made some really, really good basketball plays. … He’s going to be a really special player. This thing takes time. His nickname is Do Do and I think his nickname should be Bambi — he’s just getting his legs. He’s starting to shoot a little bit more confidently.

“Brown played one of his better games lately. Erick ran our team better, was more verbal. The mixture of Davila and Raines were sold. … Dorenzo was very good in the 2nd half.”

More on Dorian — “He played through the contact today. …  He is genuine and sincere, a good teammate. A smile on his face every day. He wants to please. He feels like a little bit he’s got the weight of the 757 on his shoulders probably…. He’s got a gift. He’s just not physically capable of using that gift all the time. The other night he has to guard Kenny Kadji. He’s giving up 50 something pounds to Kenny Kadji. Probably unrealistic. He don’t say boo. …. Getting in the gym with him, getting him to feel good about playing basketball and not feeling like he has to please everyone (was  important).

“He’s a good offensive rebounder. I think that’s been a point of emphasis for everyone who plays against us, to cut him off on the glass. That’s an area that I think he’s really got to make a concerted effort (at). … We’ve got to get him so he continues to keep coming…. He’s kind of Inspector Gadget arms, but he’s got instinct.

“He’s having a pretty good freshman year in the ACC. This is a hard league to just think you’re going to jump in. He’s having a typical freshman year for a good player that doesn’t have AD Vassallo and Deron Washington by his side. He doesn’t have Delaney and Allen. He’s got good players – Eric, who has a new role, Dorenzo who’s hopefully dealing with some demons, and Victor.”

What demons does Dorenzo have?

“Just struggling,” Seth said. “He wants to play better. He’s fighting through that. It was good to see him have a little breakthrough the 2nd half.”

Seth said he will continue to make his starting lineup on who plays hardest in practice: “The culture of this program was built on being tough. I was not happy with how competitive we were. We’re just trying to find one thing we can redefine ourselves (with).”

Seth does not know CJ’s status for FSU on Thursday: “He went down pretty good.”

Seth on Eddie, who was 1 of 5 from the field in 16 minutes: “He rushed a couple. …. Other guys were playing better.”

Seth on Dorenzo, who was 0 of 5 from the field in the 1st half but 4 of 6 in the 2nd half: “He played poorly in the first half but in the 2nd half I thought he was very very good.  … He competed down on the block with Anderson because he was the only guy physically strong enough.”

On the team: “We have really good kids. Are there things that disturb me about them?  No doubt about it. … Would I like them to be more competitive? No doubt about it. … The young guys don’t know what competitive is yet.”

On the offense compared to the Miami game: “We definitely ran better offense than we did at Miami. At Miami, we settled. We got down and we tried to make it up quick. We pounded it more than passed it. And they’re really good (UM). … They’re men and we were playing a lot of true freshmen and sophomores that really didn’t have a lot of experience, and we played that way. That’s the frustrating thing to me because we’ve been able to figure that out in the past.

“In tbe last five years we’ve won 10 games twice in the ACC, nine games twice and seven games once. That’s probably my frustration. The reality is we’re no different than Boston College except because of our recent success, we have an expectation. So that when they don’t win, we’re building for the future. When we don’t win, it’s crash and burn. ”

(This I disagree with. There is a big difference between BC and Tech. BC started 4 freshmen to VT’s two. Tech started two seniors, BC did not. That’s a pretty big difference. Tech is more experienced than BC. And we all knew BC would be lousy this year. VT, however, was picked 6th in the preseason ACC poll so there was an expectation that VT would be decent, not bad. And Seth said even before the season that we’re not going to use youth as an excuse. If you say that, fans are going to take you at your word)

Seth talked to Tom Izzo for about an hour on Friday, getting a pick me up, by the way.

Seth on the turnovers: “Our turnovers in the first half were just unforced. No different than the five consecutive ones we had at Miami.”
