What will Weaver say?

Va. Tech AD Jim Weaver has called a press conference for 4 p.m. today. What is it about?

Is he retiring? Doesn’t appear to be the case. A source just told me Jim said at a Hokie Club meeting Saturday that he was still planning to work until 2015 and finish out his contract as planned.

    Seth is gone! Hurray

  4. Peppers Ferry | April 23, 2012 at 3:10 pm

I hope he is resigning and taking the football coaching staff with him. Minus Foster, of course.

  5. JR | April 23, 2012 at 3:27 pm

    I hear Greenberg is out.

  6. hokiefan | April 23, 2012 at 3:32 pm

    Greenberg gets canned

  7. Dave Jeter | April 23, 2012 at 3:36 pm

Seth Greenberg fired as Virginia Tech’s basketball coach

  8. HokieNicole | April 23, 2012 at 3:36 pm

Word on the street is that Greenberg has been fired…

  9. Brad | April 23, 2012 at 4:10 pm

This has to be the dumbest move VT has made.

Greenberg took mediocre teams and made them competitive. Even against the toughest teams in the country, you knew that Tech had a shot. Remember, noone dreamed that VT would be competitive in the ACC.

Greenberg has to be on the verge of a breakout season. Should have been in the NCAAs at least four years.

Whatever program that picks him up will have a good basketball coach.

  10. Wes | April 23, 2012 at 4:26 pm

Well, there goes the only decent thing about Hokie Sports. Greenberg was stuck with a bunch of thugs and did a great job putting together some solid teams regardless. The only good thing about this is that now I won’t have to waste my time watching Hokie Bball.

  11. Peppers Ferry | April 23, 2012 at 4:34 pm

Greenberg was the best BB coach I knew at VT. Unlike Beamer, Greenberg could sting a few intelligent sentences together. There may have been a problem with asst coaches, which may have been only low pay, and not enough wins this year, but I don’t know anyone who could have cone better; with Weaver not willing to put money into it. Greenberg had recruited some good talent.
Weaver won’t pay enough to bring in a tried and proven talented coach, ACC, or not!!!!

  12. Peppers Ferry | April 23, 2012 at 4:42 pm

    <<<>>>>
    Weaver is a FOOL ! ! Beamer’s success ?? !!! What success!! What is that record against top 10 teams ?? Top 20 teams??? What a joke ! !
Weaver likes Beamer because Beamer hired poor quality coaches that work cheat. James Madison retreads ! ! Beamer rigs the schedule to get his 10 win season which is a sad joke.
Beamer can’t even check the rain radar online and schedule the Spring game to avoid the bad weather. Genius ! ! Weaver’s boy that works cheap!!

  13. Peppers Ferry | April 23, 2012 at 4:43 pm

Weaver said Weaver cites Frank Beamer’s continuity on staff as reason for his success. Big believer in that. Wants that in entire department.

  14. Ticocharlie | April 23, 2012 at 4:45 pm

What a shame! I really enjoyed watching him lose.

  15. Earl K | April 23, 2012 at 4:58 pm

Your lead in is perfect. Only it’s too bad that it isn’t Weaver retiring instead of Greenberg getting fired. This is a terrible decision. Greenberg is one of the best coaches in the country and deserved a few more years. Greenberg in 2012 is like Beamer was in 1992, on the hot seat, but needing a few more years to produce. Thank goodness Dave Braine didn’t can Beamer in 93!

  16. Aaron | April 23, 2012 at 5:51 pm

I’m sure people will really be falling out of the woodwork to take the Tech hoops job. PLay in an arena from the Civil War era in front of 5000 fans and get to play Duke, UNC, and NC State every year. Good luck to you folks, you will do no better then Greenberg.

  17. 1oneshot | April 23, 2012 at 6:06 pm

Peppers Ferry, Have you noticed that you are the fool? You are talking to yourself. And speaking of stringing a few sentences together, where is your content and logic?

However, this is Weaver’s chance? Will Weaver go for a Coach that will put VT basketball in the National contender league or will you be satisfied with a Coach that set’s it goals like Beamer’s football program? Play a nothing schedule and hope for a bowl game to loose!

  18. Blivet | April 23, 2012 at 6:07 pm

Did weaver delay this so Greenberg could not get another head coaching gig? Would not surprise me.

  19. Ron | April 23, 2012 at 6:12 pm

I’m not a VT grad and grew up in Big 10 territory. Don’t know much about the coaches who preceded him, but thought Greenberg did a great job in a tough basketball conference. Not keeping assistant coaches was probably a compensation matter. Beamer has retained his assistants because he was allowed to adequately compensate them. Perhaps Greenberg wasn’t allowed to do this. I think Greenberg will land someplace else pretty soon and will be successful there. Too bad for Vt.

  20. markberman | April 23, 2012 at 6:13 pm

No. Greenberg was shocked by the news today, said Weaver.

  21. TxHokie | April 23, 2012 at 6:13 pm

Sorry to see Seth go ..he’s a good coach @ a football school and in the ACC. In addition, as a former VT hoop player from long ago he always reached out to us old guys to build a tradition at VT. He’ll be missed and he’ll be in the sweet 16 somewhere in the next 5 years.

  22. Charlie | April 23, 2012 at 6:51 pm

Between the canning of Greenberg and the extremely odd hiring of Dunkenberger’s replacement, you could infer that Weaver has something against Hokie basketball. Weaver has done a pretty good job of upgrading VT non-revenue sports, but maybe it’s time for an upgrade in the AD position.

  23. Kristin | April 23, 2012 at 7:14 pm

Jim Weaver was straightforward and professional in the press conference. Seth Greenberg brought this on himself. Don’t try to blame Weaver or anyone else.

  24. mountaintruck1 | April 23, 2012 at 7:45 pm

Wow! I have never read so many comments that say, “We love our basketball coach so much, losing is ok! He is a wonderful man and that makes up for winning”. A position that pays $1.2M annually needs to produce a product that is competitive. There will be coaches interested that may surprise all these Seth worshippers.

  25. 1971 Hokie | April 23, 2012 at 7:53 pm

Best of luck to Greenberg. Pbrobably did the best he could in the situation. After watching the new conference, I wonder about our leadership at the top – AD. Has Weaver had a stoke or something? The man looked terrible. I don’t know about him sticking around thru 2015. Perhaps we need some turnover in many areas of the athletic department.

  26. Techerman | April 23, 2012 at 8:15 pm

Some people are going to call foul on Weaver for the way this went down. He all but assured Seth he would be back next year.
There’s got to be more to this story than we’ve heard so far.
Funny, there was an article in this mornings Roanoke Times that said Seth had been interested in Jerry Wainright, former DePaul head coach, to join Tech’s staff as an assistant.
IMO, Weaver needs to put Tommy Amaker at the top of his list.

  27. markberman | April 23, 2012 at 8:21 pm

that Wainwright thing was actually in Doug’s blog last week, not in today’s Roanoke Times newspaper.

  28. markberman | April 23, 2012 at 8:21 pm

Weaver disclosed in 2006 that he has Parkinson’s/

  29. Mike | April 23, 2012 at 8:32 pm

Good move dismissing Greenberg-now the pressures on the AD to get a good coach that;s the right fit.

  30. IRV blank | April 23, 2012 at 8:41 pm

What a shame. Seth brought honor and competitiveness to HOKIE basketball where it had been missing for a generation. This is a terrible reflection on the University and Jim Weaver. Reminds this old grad of the firing of Jerry Claiborne. Shame on Jim Weaver and Charles Steger for forgetting what is really important in college athletics.

  31. Boyd Walker | April 23, 2012 at 8:47 pm

Except for flopping around on the bench when he figured a call went against Tech he did a great job. How can any coach in the ACC compete against Duke, N Carolina and now Florida State except for an occasional great game. If you had ACC talent would you enroll at UVA or Tech? NO NO you would not.

  32. Scott | April 23, 2012 at 9:02 pm

Hear it here first. Miami’s Jim Larranaga would move to Blacksburg from Miami if asked. He’d move by week’s end. He went to Miami for the ACC, not Miami. He fits (in a Boy Scout cheesy way) perfectly into the Blacksburg Beamerball culture like nobody else in college basketball. The Hokie Nation would love him and vice versa. And he can recruit well immediately. He also is a proven tireless program saleman, completely loyal to the cause. He’d completely pay for himself. Don’t dismiss, even if he claims “no” at first. It would be a perfect mutual fit and at a reasonable price. Departing Asst Coach James Johnson (ex-Larranaga key assistant) also back in play with such a move.

  33. Danny Tyler | April 23, 2012 at 9:27 pm

VT should consider hiring Billy Hicks and his staff at Cave Spring HS. I’m serious! Those guys have been together forever and can coach as well as anyone at any level. Proven winners.

  34. Rick | April 23, 2012 at 9:44 pm

Ah the stench of Greenberg is lifting from the NRV (first RU, now VT). He should have been canned 2 years ago for doing zip with all that talent! You can handle arrogance if it gets you the trophy, but he did little with an ACC program. Maybe your brother Brad can get you a job in Brazil, Cuba or whatever foreign country he’s slinking around in now.

  35. Maloof | April 23, 2012 at 9:50 pm

The next VT Basketball Coach will be?
    James Johnson
    Greg Marshall
    Shaka Smart
    Mike Bray
    Dell Curry

  36. Mike | April 23, 2012 at 10:48 pm

Great comment Rick!!!Arrogance works only when winning!! As for Maloof’s question, chat boards heard a 9pm meeting tonight with Shaka in Richmond
with VT AD’s. I’m guessing a quick hire by this Friday and like all of your picks but James Johnson.

  37. Mike | April 23, 2012 at 11:49 pm

    FIRE JIM WEAVER NEXT PLEASE.
HE just embarassed VT nationally with the method and timing of firing.
If players and recruits leave, VT’s Jim Weaver has botched it again.
Name his hires and which ones were good!
ONLY good one and ironically that was Seth Greenberg. LOL

  38. Mike | April 23, 2012 at 11:53 pm

I’d go with Dell Curry. Should have a heck of a recruiting base and knowledge, and brings the NBA tag with him. We owe him anyway.

  39. GSAZ | April 25, 2012 at 12:50 pm

I’ve been gone a long time but I have to ask if anybody else notices that SG NEVER sits on a bench. Rarely, if ever, talks to his assistants during a game. SG is the king and smacks of selfishness and a total controlling….coach. Could be why the assistants always leave.

  40. DR. HOWARD PARDUE | April 30, 2012 at 6:17 pm

TO MIKE , TO WHAT DO WE OWE DELL CURRY..I MISSED THAT ONE..WHEN HE LETS HIS SONS GOT TO OTHER SCHOOLS..WE OWE HIM NOTHING…..WHAT AM I MISSING..GOES FOR HIS WIFE AS WELL…..ARE NOT BOTH VT GRADS..OR DID DELL GRADUATE??
