Hokies discuss scrimmage

Here is what James Johnson and some of his players had to say about the scrimmage:

Erick Green on the style of play in the scrimmage: “That’s probably what you’re going to see (during the season). We’ve got some good guys that can shoot the ball. We’re playing faster. We’re in pretty good shape so far. …. We’re just going to try to play fast. We’re going to try to stay out of halfcourt situations as much as we can. We don’t want to set up our offense. But we like the pick and roll, we like a lot of flat screens, just spreading the court and get people open. … If they take us out of our fast-paced game, we’re going to stay in half court and we’ve got some good plays Coach Johnson put in.”

Green on his teammates’ play in the scrimmage: “Wood had a great game. He’s a great shooter. Cadarian played well. Robert Brown had a good game. These guys, I know what they can do. I’m just glad that other people are finally seeing it. These guys are stepping up and getting better.”

Green on who the No. 2 scorer on the team will be this year: ”It’s going to change. We’ve got Jarell one game, we’ve got Rob one game, sometimes you’ve got Cadarian, Marshall might be the next. Whoever has the hot hand.”

Green on the inside game: “We’re going to get Cadarian and C.J. the ball early in the post.”

Cadarian Raines on the scrimmage: “Coach wants to move fast, he wants to score the ball quickly, and we did that.”

Raines on how he will score in the uptempo offense: ”I may be running fast, then they’re dumping the ball down to me quickly. So it’s good with me.”

James Johnson on the scrimmage: “We don’t have a lot of guys, but I was pretty pleased with the conditioning of the guys. … We’re in pretty decent condition, but we’ve got to … continue to get better with our conditioning. … As we continue to play and get up and down the floor, then we’ll play ourselves into better conditioning. But after eight practices, I’m kind of pleased where we’re at right now.”

Johnson on the halfcourt offense: “We have our set plays in, some opportunities to get the ball inside to Cadarian …. and we’ve got some stuff to get Erick Green coming off some screens to get him some shots — and also Marshall Wod and Jarell Eddie,”

Johnson on why Joey van Zegeren did not play in the scrimmage: “He could’ve played today. It’s a precautionary thing. He tweaked his knee in practice the other day, but he could’ve played today. He went through our shootaround early today and he also went through pregame warmups. … He’s going to be big for us. …  We expect him to be able to step in when Raines needs a blow or (gets in) foul trouble.”

Johnson on Wood: “I see him being a big part of what we’re trying to do. He can run the floor — he fits into our style there. He can face up and knock the 3 down, as you saw today, and he can do some stuff around the basket. And he’s a very good rebounder. Today him rebounding the basketball was not a surprise to me.”

Johnson on the team: “This is a very unselfish group that we have, as shown by the assist count that we had today. … The second and third passes that we had to the open man, I was pleased with that today.”
