More comments from Hokies on beating UNCG
My game story was in the previous blog post. Now here are some extra quotes that were not in that story.
Erick Green on his injury “I kind of rolled my ankle. I got over it. I had to fight through it. … I wasn’t going to lose. I was going to do whatever it took. I wasn’t going to get out of the game.”
Green on whether Tech is ready for Iowa and Oklahoma St.: “We’re ready for anything they put in front of us. I’m not worried about anybody. … That’s going to test us to see where really we’re at.”
Jarell Eddie on why Tech is a good 3-point shooting team: “Coach tells us to get a lot of shots up. Guys are coming in to get extra shots up, late nights, early morning. We practice our shooting and it shows up for us in the game. … If it’s falling for us, we’re going to take the shot. …. Guys are confident in their 3-point shooting ability.”
Eddie on the VT defense: “We’re playing solid in the halfcourt defense. We’ve got to get better transitiion defense. We’ve got to be able to finish possessions out with defensive rebounding.”
James Johnson on the UNCG comeback: “That’s a very good ballclub. … A little bit was us, we relaxed a little bit. And then on their end, they did a great job of making shots. The Simpson kid got hot and started shooting from deep. A couple of them, we were right there in his face and he knocked them down. But we knew he was that type of player. … They did a good job (with) offensive execution and making shots and putting us in certain positions with those ball screens. I think our guys came back and kind of adjusted to that later on and started getting stops and we went on a big run.”
Johnson on his team’s 3-point shooting: “This is an unselfish group and we take what’s there. We do a very good job of reading off of our set plays and reading in transition. We hit the open guy. … I don’t know if that’s going to be the norm (all the 3s) but I think we’ve got some guys that can make shots, and we do a very good job of finding the open man.”
Johnson on Eddie’s 3 blocks: “One thing we want to do is contest shots. … You look at Jarell Eddie at 6-7, he’s got length, he’s long and he’s athletic so that really bothers guys.”
Johnson on the team’s play down the stretch: “We made a little bit of an adjustment on the ball screens. We were pressuring the ball screens and as we pressed them, they shot the ball a little deeper each time. …. Late in the game we did some switching … to takeaway dribble handoffs and take away the 3. …. I liked our offense, our numbers and our score but the defensive field goal percentage (42.7 percent) and their points are just a little too much for me.”
UNCG coach Wes Miller on UNCG’s comeback: “Our guys just didn’t give in. … We got live ball stops during that stretch … defensive rebounds or turnovers where the ball is still in play really fuels our primary break and our secondary break and we can put pressure on people. I thought we did that during that stretch.”
Miller on Tech’s play down the stretch: “The one thing we’ve really got to figure out is how to close games out. It’s about the defensive end of the floor. We’ve just got to get more sound when the game gets on the line and dig in a little bit harder to get stops. … The tough shots I can live with, but some of the easy ones down the stretch and that offensive rebound in front of thVan Dusseneir bench, those are the ones that I think hurt us. … There were two baskets that I remember where you’ve just got to kind of tip your hat and clap your hands and that’s Green’s shot in the lane over Van Dussen .. and Jarell Eddie’s shot over Trevis on the wing. But the other baskets we gave up and the fouls, I thought we weren’t very sound.”
