Miss. Valley St. next for Hokies

Men’s basketball

Monday

Miss. Valley State at Va. Tech

7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum

Records: Va. Tech 7-1; MVSU 0-5.

Internet: ESPN3.com

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Va. Tech probable starters: F C.J. Barksdale (5.6 ppg), F Jarell Eddie (15.6 ppg), C Cadarian Raines (9 ppg), G Robert Brown (14.4 ppg), G Erick Green (24.6 ppg).

MVSU probable starters: F Blake Ralling (5.6 ppg), 6-11 F Julius Francis (6.6 ppg), 7-0 C Montreal Holley (0.4 ppg), G Davon Usher (19.4 ppg), G Darryl Marshall (5.4 ppg).

Notes: This game and Saturday’s home game against Georgia Southern are part of the Las Vegas Tire Classic. But regardless of what happens in either game, Tech’s four-team bracket (with Bradley, Portland and Colorado State) in the Las Vegas portion of the event is already set. … After three straight games against foes from major conferences, Tech returns to its diet of less challenging opponents. MVSU is coming off a 67-39 loss at Virginia on Saturday after previously losing to Mississippi, Cincinnati, Northwestern and LSU. …. The Delta Devils won the SWAC regular-season and tournament titles and made the NCAA tournament last season under former coach Sean Woods, who is now the coach at Morehead State. The new coach is former MVSU assistant Chico Potts. The only returning player on the entire team is Ralling, who played sparingly last season. … The Hokies will be trying to bounce back from Saturday’s loss at West Virginia. They hope their defense won’t be as confused tonight as it was on WVU’s winning basket, when Juwan Staten drove through a gaping hole in the Tech defense for a wide-open layup. “We just got screwed up on the switching,” Tech coach James Johnson said.
