Link: Beyer and Johnston

Here is the link to my college basketball notebook in today’s paper, with most of it about Christian Beyer and Will Johnston of the Hokies:

Mark, how come no one is questioning Wolffs performance with the womens program. They are an embarassment to the university. I have 9 year olds that can shoot better than 25% from the floor and 1-10 from the foul line. Is there a committment to this program or is it just an accomodation to Title IX.

Don’t forget the 27 turnovers the Hokies committed at Duke last night — another bad aaspect of the offense. This team can play defense but the offense is woeful.

Anybody can be taught to play defense. He could recruit an acceptable team out of the 757 area alone. Throw in a couple of JC or foreign players and compete. I just don’t think he and the university are really that interested. I question the committment.

It is obvious that VT has given up on it’s womens basketball program. Nothing else explains the state of the program. Our players and fans deserve better. Absolutely embarassing, and not a new development. This is not a niche sport. We have been good, with fantastic fan participation…what happened? When the wheels started coming off, why didn’t we go all out to fix it?

#6 Perch, Jim Weaver has no interest in any of the sports beyond football. Even there his effort is minimal. Hopefully when we hire his successor, the next person will actually understand that athletic program means more than ‘football because it makes us money’. The sooner Weaver is gone, the better, for ALL of the sports programs.
