More from Hokies on loss to Maryland
If you’ve already read my game story in the previous post about the Hokies’ latest lopsided loss, here are some more quotes on the game:
Green on giving up 94 pts: “They outrebounded us. They crashed the boards. They had a lot of energy. They went on a nice little run and we never got a chance to answer back.”
Green on whether Tech played with more energy than it had in recent losses: “I thought we competed, I really did. I understand the score and probably y’all thinking something different, but I felt like we had a little energy.”
Green on giving up 10 treys: “They were hittijg, they were on fire. They had some wide open looks and then we had some hands in their faces and they were hitting.”
Green on playing with six scholarship players: “It’s hard when we have a thin bench. But we can’t use that as an excuse. … We’ve got to play better.”
Green on what VT must improve upon defensively: “Delaying second chance points. That and straight line drives — we’re getting beat off the dribble and they’re kicking out and making plays.”
Van Zegeren on what VT must improve upon defensively: “Transition defense. We had a couple turnovers where they ran on us and got some layups. … We’ve got to get a little bit … better in rebounding so that they don’t have that much offensive rebounds, they don’t get second chances, they can’t kick it out for a 3 for a second chance.”
Van Zegeren on why Len was hard to deal with: “His length. He’s a tall guy, long arms, so he rebounds really well — both sides (offensive and defensive rebounding). And the other bigs are also very good rebounders.”
Van Zegeren on Layman: “No. 10 surprised us a little with his outside shots.”
Brown on the Terps: “They just hit shots, a lot of transition 3.s They got some wide open shots.”
Brown on the rebounding: “We did a better job rebounding than we had been doing in the last couple games. … To start the game off they had like six offensive rebounds or something and then we kind of buckled down and started boxing out and started grabbing rebounds.”
Johnson on the team: “You’ve got to have more guys playing well and more consistent, and we just haven’t had that in the last couple games and definitely didn’t have it tonight. …. We need more guys to play consistent and we need more guys to step up and make plays.”
Johnson Barksdale: “Right now we’ve got some guys that are giving more effort and playing harder than CJ right now. Last game out Beyer came out with 11 rebounds and van Zegeren is competing and playing like I want him to play. We’re going to need him (CJ) but right now other guys are playing a little better than he is. … This is one game but I’m trying to build a program and we want to play hard, we want to play with effort. … He just hasn’t been getting it done the way I want. I want to try some other guys. … He’s got to step it up….. We need better rebounding on both ends of the floor and I think the guys that played tonight in his place did a pretty good job of that in van Zegeren and Beyer. … It was a feel thing throughout the game (not using CJ). Starting out with van Zegeren and Raines inside, I thought they did a very good job on the backboards. And I wanted to give Eddie a little bit of a look at 4 too so that he can give us a mismatch against their bigger guys and maybe get some shots. And I wanted to go with Beyer. It was just a feel thing throughout. I don’t know how he’ll take. it. He’s got to bounce back. He’s got to get tough. He’s got to bounce back and understand … we need him to be more consistent. … I don’t have a lot of options over there but that’s one position where I’ve got some guys that can give me something, as van Zegeren showed, as Beyer has showed.”
Johnson on what message the benching sends: “I’m trying to biuld a program and that’s going to be what it’s like. When we get numbers and we’re able to have enough guys where we can do that, it’ll be different. But if you don’t give effort, if you don’t play hard and someone else is doing it, I’ve got to reward the guys that are doing what I want done out there on the floor.”
Johnson on the shot selection: “We’ve got maybe one guy that we can go into the post with, throw it in there. There’s times than we go into the post. … But I’m pleased with the shot selection. Those are the same shots that we were making early on in the year.”
Johnson on Layman: “Not real surprised. He didn’t come out of nowhere. We knew he could really shoot the basketball. He was just not shooting the ball great up until this point. …. We certainly knew about him.” (This answer was reminiscent of the WVU game, where Noreen entered the game averaging 1 point and scored in double digits, a career high, and the players said they were surprised but Johnson said he wasn’t. Same thing this time. Are you buying Johnson’s answer or do you believe the players?)
Johnson on the defense: “Our defense was better. They knocked down a lot of shots. …. You go into the game with a game plan. Len is a first round pick. We wanted to try to take away their posts. They’ve got four guys inside. …. And we’re thin up front anyway. We’re going into the game with a game plan that we wanted to kind of take those post guys away and I thought we did a good job of doing that. Now, on the kick out, we’ve got to get there.”
Johnson on Brown: “I’m getting effort out of Brown. His shot’s just not going down for him right now. But I am getting effort out of him right now. And that’s something we’re trying to preach, we’re trying to learn, that we want to play hard, we want to play with effort every single night and try to defend every single night, and then hopefully our offense is going to come around at some point. But I don’t want to judge a guy’s game on the offensive end.”

I believe the players. Didn’t see the scouting report but how would they know if the scouting report didn’t emphasize it. It’s something deeper with Barksdale, I can see benching him to make a point, but for a whole game? I wouldn’t be surprised to see him transfer if the difference keeps up.
Who cares if Green scores 28 points if they don’t know how to play defense? Johnson saying their D was better? yeah they only gave up 94 points this time instead of 97 when they played last so yeah big improvement. And I understand that its hard to play with only 7 players, but Virginia did it last year and at one point really only had 6 healthy players with Harris playing with a broken hand, and they still made the tournament so that excuse only goes so far
I am a believer in coach Johnston. Eddie and Brown will make shots, at least off and on,and VT will win a few more games. Give it a few more years. Blenching Barksdsale tells this is a coach who is sending a serious message to current and future players.
Oops. Barksdale.
