Are Hokies getting tired?

Are the Hokies getting weary? That’s what James Johnson said this week.

Erick Green leads the nation in scoring (25 ppg) but was just 7 of 21 from the field in last weekend’s overtime loss at North Carolina. He had 16 points in 43 minutes.

Green leads the ACC in minutes (36.4 mpg).

“He’s playing a lot of minutes, but he’s also getting double and triple teamed,” Johnson said. “I sense a little bit of fatigue, some wearing down in him. … He’s seeing a lot of big, strong bodies now as we go through the course of this ACC season here. You’re looking at guys that are 6-5, 205 pounds that are guarding him and then they’re sending 6-9, 240 at him, trapping in him in ball screens and bumping him.

“Seomtimes your legs just don’t have it, and I think that he wore down a little bit on Saturday.”

The Hokies, who were outscored 17-5 in OT at UNC, have lost four in a row.

“Certain guys have played a lot of minutes, and I think that’s just wearing on them,” Johnson said. ”We’ve just got guys that have are playing a lot of minutes, and they’ve been doing that all year long, and I think it’s just taking its toll now.”

I guess Johnson forgot about 2010, when the Hokies were in a similar situation. Even to the point where they took UNC down to the wire, but had so many players injured it was scary that they’d be able to finish with five on the court, due to fouls and injuries.

Everyone knew before the season the scholarship player status back in the spring. Everyone knew the walk-on player status back in the spring. When Greenberg was the coach, those who hated ‘outsiders’ refused him to use that as foundation for being an underdog in games. I like Johnson, but his problem is nothing new, it’s absolutely nothing different from what Greenberg battled without concession from many in the Hokie ‘family’. Not to mention, Johnson was on the coaching staff when it happened before.

It’s time to man up. It’s a man’s game, and it’s time to play ball. There are no asterisks.

The Hokies got outcoached in the overtime at UNC.

They were not tired against UVA or BYU, they just didn’t show up to play.

    Whose responsibility is that?

CR, Evidently, Weaver forgot about the 2010 season when he made his We are Family statement last April. 22-10.beat Duke on Game Day and made the semifinals of the ACC tournament-all with a boatload of injuries. I`ll bet Delaney got bodied up as much Green is this year. With Harrell and DFS this team would not be “tired”. I like JJ too and hope he has success down the road but the failure of this season and demise of the basketball program can be put on Weaver. The last thing I remember about the 2010 season is Wichita States 7 foot something center shooting layups against our 6`8“ walk on center in an overtime loss and then running around on the court like thy had done something. Seth held his basketball family together pretty well that year.

Well, some clueless non-hoops I.Q. comments here… sheesh. Watch the game. Early in the game, VT was fresh and was shifting its zone quickly and contesting shots and UNC was not hitting them. They did find some holes at the high post with Macadoo and that got them back in the game. Their legs gave out in OT and they were slow to rotate to the shooters in the zone. Yeah Greenberg had some injuries, but he had enough talent to overcome it. This year, with Greenberg’s caustic personality having run off numerous players who could have contributed (Ben Boggs, Manny Atkins, Garland), we are short

No Woody you and the beloved chokies are not short your pathetic!! These sorry chokies can’t beat nobody!! You saw tonight’s game and saw the one man offensive and what got me laughing was Johnston just being used as a screen and looking like a fool thinking his sorry teammates will even allow him to shoot!! The beloved chokies are on the ride to nowhere you and the chokie nation hop aboard because there is plenty of room for the nation that thinks this team can beat anybody!! Know in reality you can’t beat anybody!!! Now go choke on that!!
