Johnson, Coach K eye Thursday’s game
Here is what the VT and Duke coaches had to say on the ACC teleconference:
James Johnson on Duke and how they can’t copy the Maryland game cause Maryland has big man Alex Len: “We can’t go on the blueprint of what those guys did. We’ve got to try to play to what we have and the guys we have. … Offensively we’ve got to be sharp and execute. … They’re going to pressure us and try to take us out of our offense so we’ve got to do a very good job of executing our offense. We’ve got to control Plumlee and then control the 3-point shooting.”
Johnson on whether he will start Eddie and/or Wood vs. Duke: “We need guys that can handle the ball out there on the floor. So there’s definitely going to be a lineup change and it may not be because of performance, it just may be because of what we need in this particular game.”
Johnson on Johnston and Eddie: “Will Johnston has been more productive than him. He just hasn’t been playing up to my expectations for him and Will … is playing by my standards a little better than Eddie. I’ve got to play the guy who I think is given us the productivity we need. … He did a great job of being over on the sidelines and keeping his head in the game and being ready to play. … He answered the bell.”
Johnson on whether Eddie’s game Saturday will give him some momentum: “You hope that’s going to happen but you never know. Hopefully that gave him a little bit of confidence and boost his morale a little bit … and see a big basket …. but I’m not sure. He’s had a couple games where he’s done that and then has come out and not played particularly great after that, so I’m not sure. Hopefully he can do that. … I need him to be a little bit more consistent. He’s a junior he shouldn’t …. have a game here, a game there. He should be a little bit more consistent. … He knows he’s got to play better.”
Johnson on Marshall Wood: “I didn’t see a performance like that coming. …. We’ve been doing extra work with him after practice and just working on getting his wind back, getting his legs back, just getting some extra shots. …. He’s getting his legs back now, his confidence. … He’s playing very energetic, getting on the glass. … We missed him those six weeks he was out. I think had he not gotten hurt we would’ve seen this earlier in the season. … He likes to rebound, got a knack for it, got a nose for it.”
Johnson on Green: “He’s a true point guard, he plays with point guard instincts. He’s not trying to be the leading scorer in the nation … He wants to win and he makes the right basketball play out there. If he drives to the hole and a couple guys come, he’s going to dump it down or kick it out.”
Mike Krzyzewski on Green: “He’s a terrific player and young man. He’s a scoring machine. And as a result of his ability to score, he creates opportunities for his teammates to score because he draws so much attention. To draw that attention and still score the way he does is remarkable. He can break you down. He can knock down the 3 but he can also get to the foul line. … He’s one of the best players in the country. I think he’s pretty much scored against everybody. You’ve got to just hope you don’t let him score in all three of those ways, if you can take one of those things away, either keep him off the foul line or not let him get as many 3s. … They do a great job of putting him in position where he has the ball and can score. If he doesn’t have the ball, they do things so that when he gets the ball he can score. They position him in different parts of the court — very well conceived.”
Krzyzewski on Duke’s loss to Maryland coming on the heels of 2 close wins: “For the last 41 days we’ve been playing without Ryan Kelly, so it’s not about what we’ve lost, it’s about what we’ve won. The story for my team is the fact that we’re competing, … doing a terrific job and we’ve continued to win at a pretty high level without Ryan. The story isn’t that we lost, the story is how much we’ve won.”
Krzyzewski on Kelly: “We believe he’ll come back at some time. … At some time we’ll have to be able to try things out. I think you need to do that before the NCAA tournament for his good and our team’s good. It’s been 41 days now since the injury and my team has done I think just an amazing job since then and Ryan’s done an amazing job in trying to get back and hopefully we can try to see if something will work here in the not too distant future, but no timetable.”

Duke crushes at least by 20pts!!
Mark, what`s the deal on that kid Rowsey from Rockbridge who`s set to become the state career scoring leader. If you know, is he a possible Div 1 player and has he been recruited by anyone?
He signed with Big South power UNC Asheville.
Interesting that it seems Johnson has just written Eddie off as a player. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Hokie basketball coach be so critical of his plays in a public forum. Johnson has done that quite often this season already. Quite the ‘family’ atmosphere…
The way I see it, Johnson is telling it like it is and not trying to tip toe around it. I think it is refreshing to have a coach that tells us how he feels. Eddie knows it is true. He needs or needed to step up.
Funny how the last guy was so reviled by many for being candid and blunt. Good thing Johnson isn’t from NYC or he’d be hated for not being ‘one of us’. Even with the bluntness of the last coach, he never publicly called out his players. Johnson does so repeatedly, with all of them except Green. I’m sure the locker room is awash in brotherhood because of it.
Good coaches don’t need to embarrass their players in public. They understand real teams handle it within the team, not through the media. Hopefully Johnson will come to learn that in his OJT.
