More from Hokies on win over Clemson
If you have already read my game story in the previous blog post or in the paper or elsewhere on the website, here are some additional quotes that weren’t in that article:
CJ Barksdale on his clutch free throws: “I’ve been in the situation before. You can’t go to the line in clutch situations nervous and stuff so I just … shot like a normal free throw. … You’ve got to be confident.”
Robert Brown on his good shooting night: “It’s definitely feels good to have it on senior night, to send Erick out of Cassell for the last time with a win and …. Joey Racer. …. Erick personally for me, just being around him and hanging out with him as much as I do, he’s done a lot for me over these two years that I’ve een with him. and to send both of them out there with the win is a big thing for us. … When he hit that first one, I could tell it was going to be a big night for him.”
Brown on why he had a good night: “Just getting to the rim as much as I can. We tried to do some post up things on the smaller guard that had me, so Coach did a good job with the game plan, trying to post him up and get him in foul trouble.”
Brown on whether he can say his slump is now dead: “No, I’m not going to do that because I don’t want to get too ahead of myself. I’m just going to keep focusing and keep letting that motivate me and push me. I think that I am turning a corner. I’m getting better, getting more confident and hopefully we can keep this going.”
Erick Green on the pregame ceremony: “So emotional. People don’t know the struggle, the stuff we went through from being a freshman to here. I’m just glad I had these moments with them, walking out there, knowing that they’ve been there since day one with me, it doesn’t get better than that.”
Green on the game: “Clemson made a comeback, kind of scared me, but we held our own. It means we’re getting better. It was a great team win. CJ Barksdale played a heckuva game, getting better and better and better every day. Robert Brown’s coming along, getting out of a slump. .. I’m really proud of these guys,”
Green on why he head a big first half: “I had a bad taste in my mouth about the Miami game, how I played.”
Green on Clemson’s press: “Booker’s big, he’s got a wingspan. It’s hard to see when you get the ball in the corner. That big dude’s just sitting there, you can’t see nobody else.”
Green on the green some fans were wearing: “That made me smile. I just want to thank the crowd for everything. These four years have been great, just seeing myself grow and having these fans stick with me through it all. It’s been a long journey and I’m glad we went out this way.”
Green on only taking 12 shots: “People were saying Go for 40, things like that, but that’s not who I am. I’ve never been that way. I think I shot 12 shots … That’s the type of player I am. I’m really not a high jacker. I like getting my teammates involved.”
Green on what James Johnson told him in the pregame ceremony: “He loved me. I just thanked him. I told him, thank you for believing in me. People don’t know, that man really stuck with me through high school and got me where I’m at today. That was just a great moment. I really wanted to tear up when he hugged me and said that.”
James Johnson on the win: “To send him out a winner, that was one of the things that we wanted to do, but we also wanted to play well. … Barksdale continued to play the way he’s been playing the last few games. Brown stepped up in the first half. …. Raines, it doesn’t show up in the stat sheet as far as numbers but he did a great job on Booker.”
Johnson on the first half: “The offense clicking in the first half was the ability of Robert Brown to step up and help Erick. Erick Green got off to a good start but the ability for Robert Brown to be able to drive to the basket …. That’s one of the things we wanted, to attack the basket and not just settle for 3s. Robert’s ability to get to the basket opened things up.”
Johnson on the pregame ceremony: “That touched me…. Chills there. .. I’ve known that kid since he was 15 years old. …. I anticipated him coming out and having a big game.”
Johnson on Green: “He doesn’t get too up, he doesn’t get too down. Sometimes I’d like for him to get a little bit more emotional but he’s not that type of player….. He makes a play and it’s like ‘I’m supposed to make that play, Coach.’ ”
Johnson on Barksdale: “He’s starting to come into the gym and work on his game a little more outside of practice. He’s started to play harder and give more effort and more energy, and now it’s starting to carry over as far as the points and the rebounds. …. He’s putting it all together now.”
Clemson coach Brad Brownell: “The Virginia Tech kids made some great one on one shots tonight. Certainly Erick Green is more than capable of that and was fantastic and unbelievably efficient. ….. Brown was very good. He certainly took advantage of Jordan Roper.”
Brownell on the 2nd half and the Tigers: “They figured out the zone and were much better in the 2nd half against the zone. …. We probably just had 4 or 5 bad offensive possessions that were in some critical areas. … Our young guards sometimes just do some silly things. … We’d guard them for awhile and then we’d just foul. …. We really just wanted them to make free throws at the end because we didn’t give ourselves a chance to make them have to score. We were just a little too eager and not discipline enough to finish.”
Brownell on Green: “You’re just running 2 people at him all the time…. He made some shots off screens, he made some runners …. it’s just hard to guard him one on one. …. We didn’t guard him as well off some screens as we normally do, early on, but later in the game we got better with that.”
Brownell on his press: “It’s always a little more effective when there’s a little more desperation and there was some desperation tonight. We certainly knocked some balls loose and that gave us a chance.”

Thanks Eric for all you have done for tech basketball. It’s been a tough year.
Being the top scorer in the country is no small accomplishment . Let’s make some noise in the acc tournament . Good luck with your pro career.
A nice win. Great to see the occassional glimpse of promise from young players like Barksdale. It’s unfortunate that they’ve been unable to muster more than Erick Green on most nights.
I’m still watching, but this season has been exhausting. Will be happy to get to the ACC tournament and get it over with.
Next up, the Nats! Thank goodness.
Glad they won on senior Night. I see Green as a first rounder. Good on him.
Could not have been a better night for Green. Great to see him have the night he had. Well deserved. One thing I could not believe was JJ putting Eddie in on his press breaking team. He’s turnover city and he didn’t disappoint. Could not believe it. But then I see the breaking press offense JJ has devised and it all made sense. Absolutely horrible.
No way Green is a first rounder as ridiculous as that is. He’s certainly as good as either of the Curry brothers, but the NBA is a funny creature. Guys like Green get left on the sideline all the time. He’s tall enough, fast enough, accurate enough, but he’s not NBA enough. I’m rooting for him but I question whether it will happen.
Yeah VT is a disaster when pressed. I don’t get it, after suffering failure after failure when pressed don’t they practice it? Eddie is a terrible ball handler – he better get to work this summer ’cause right now he’s a liability second only to Brown who’s not a great ball handler either. Green had some bad turnovers last night too.
I just can’t see this team becoming a fast paced team. Isn’t anyone else asking that? I mean how do you get from there to here? There is no speed on this team.
