Thanks to football coach Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech athletic department employees will have their own special place to watch the NCAA baseball regional at English Field this weekend.
Beamer donated $5,000 to the athletic department to rent the Hahn gardens picnic area for the exclusive use of Tech athletic department employees during the entire regional, which begins Friday. That area is down the left-field foul line, outside the fences.
The seating capacity of English Field during the regional will be 4,881 (excluding the Hahn gardens area). That capacity includes about 1,000 temporary seats that Tech has added for the regional.
When the Hokies hosted the New York Yankees in a 2008 exhibition, Tech added about 2,200 extra seats by bringing in temporary bleachers behind the outfield fences and along the right-field line. Tech is adding fewer extra seats this time, opting to add bleachers only along the right-field line.
Plenty of tickets remain for the regional, which will last three or four days. Through Wednesday, Tech had sold 1,500 tickets for the Hokies’ game Friday against UConn. Hokie Club members bought 500 seats for Friday’s game for Tech students.
UVa will also hold a regional this weekend. UVa has 1,700 tickets still available for purchase for the regional at 4,956-seat Davenport Field.
