I hope Mason proves to be a better internal hire than any of Weaver’s others. Best of luck to Pete Hughes. He did a tremendous job at Tech. Having spent time in the OKC/Norman area I can’t say I blame him. Pete if you’re reading this, most storm shelter companies are offering deals right now. Buy one.
Good luck to Coach Mason and Coach Hughes! The COO (Comittee of one) told one coach farewell without even a counter and hired another without even leaving his house! Hopefully Coach Mason will have much more success than JJ, DW et al. PLEASE retire Jim and turn the department over to someone who doesnt run things like it is 1982.
Hmmm. This reeks of the same moron hire that Weaver perfected in hiring JJ. Hire a guy in a hurry so he doesn’t lose recruits? How did that work out last time? Weaver is an idiot who I am beginning to agree does the job with out ever getting out of his pajamas.
Mason may be great. It’s college baseball, nobody cares, but the man was born on his heels.
Hughes was on the last year of his contract and everyone had heard he was being courted by other schools. Why did Weaver not even try to extend his contract prior to this situation? No wonder Hughes said don’t go back asking for a new package. You’ve proven I am not wanted Mr. Weaver. Weaver’s pattern of behavior has become predictable and detrimental to the VT sports program
in all aspects. The merits of hiring from within are lost when there were never any other contingency plans. This latest battle with incompetence discloses Weaver is only a football AD and that is becoming subject to ridicule. Steger a lame duck! Is anyone at VT keeping tabs on these poor decision making hierarchy snafus??
A regular blogger in these parts calls it protecting the shield. Here
to say the shield has been lost or stolen.
Hughes had ONE more year to go on his deal — next season.
Thanks for the correction Mark. Still hoping one day the logic for ongoing contractual renewals and negotiations resonates in BBurg other than just for gridiron coaches prior to the buzzards swarming.
Ok Mark, so Hughes had one more year left in his contract. Most coaches that want to be retained are offered extensions well before they enter their last contract year.
Did perhaps JW drop the ball and not make an effort to keep him? Or was Hughes not that relished for some reason?
