We have known for some time that the Hokies would be playing in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Brooklyn with Michigan State, Oklahoma and Seton Hall, but now we know which team Tech will be playing on the first night.
It’s the best team in the group — Michigan State.
The Hokies will meet Tom Izzo’s Spartans at about 9:30 p.m. on Friday Nov. 22 at the Barclays Center (Oklahoma and Seton Hall square off in the 7 p.m. game).
So VT will meet Oklahoma or Seton Hall the following night.
All four games will air on truTV.
The Spartans will be an NCAA title contender again this coming season. Keith Appling, Adreian Payne and Gary Harris are among the four starters back; they were the top three scorers on the MSU team. Payne also was one of Luke Hancock’s teammates on the U.S. World University Games squad last month. Appling averaged 13.4 points last season and had a team-high 120 assists, with Harris averaging 12.9 points and Payne 10.5 points and 7.6 rebounds. Also back is Brandon Dawson (8.9 ppg).
Michigan State lost to Duke in the Sweet 16, finishing at 27-9. MSU has never faced Tech before.
We still don’t know who will be coming to VT for the Hokies’ two games in the on-campus rounds. But unlike being in the Preseason NIT, Tech is assured of going to Brooklyn no matter what happens in the Cassell games.
