Notes: Winthrop is off to its best start in more than 30 years, although two of the wins came against Roanoke College and Virginia Intermont. Winthrop did beat USC Upstate (82-74), the team that defeated the Hokies in the season opener. Winthrop’s lone loss was to VCU (92-71). … The Eagles are averaging 81.2 points and 8.3 3-pointers. “They do a very good job of pushing the ball up the floor,” Tech coach James Johnson said. “We’re going to have to do a good job in transition defense. We’ve got to make them play against our set defense.” … Tech is 2-0 against Big South teams this season. Winthrop was picked fifth out of six South Division teams in the Big South preseason poll. … Tech’s Ben Emelogu might miss his third straight game (concussion symptoms). … Eddie has recorded double-doubles in three straight games. … Fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to this game for the Montgomery County Christmas Store.
