Ex-Mix One6 promoters rebound with cool shows

A few months ago, promoters Jon Griffin and Brian Zickafoose made some music news in Roanoke, booking shows such as Perpetual Groove, Dubconscious, the Bridge and Bassnectar into the Mix One6.

It wasn't long before the Mix's ownership decided against hosting the shows, citing what it said was disappointing attendance. Griffin and Zickafoose strongly disputed the numbers the club cited. These days, the venue is known simply as the Mix, and appears to be a disco room, with heavy attendance on some nights.

Not to be stopped from promoting live music, Griffin and Zickafoose have moved on, with their new Plugged In-tertainment. The two have booked three really interesting shows at 202 Market.

The Bridge will return to Roanoke on Aug. 29. Lotus, with SeepeopleS, play 202 on Nov. 3. The New Mastersounds, from Leeds, U.K., will be here Nov. 10.

Read on for more info on these shows.

roanoke.com's top 5 music videos this week

From new channels editor Dwayne Yancey:

>It's shake-up time. For weeks (eight of nine, in fact), The Seed claimed the top sot on our MusicCast. But, as their song says, "No More." Now it's more like a different No. 1 song every week. This week, "Demijohn" by the Pickin Buds out of Franklin County claims the crown, up from the fourth spot last week. "Demijohn" has been No. 1 before -- but then again, so have most of these songs at one point or another. So what will be the favorite music video on the MusicCast next week? You tell us. We base the MusicCast Top 5 on who gets the most plays -- so if there's someone you like, just keep on clicking.

>If you think your band's video should be in the Top 5, post it to our site, and maybe it will be. Many of these are videos the artists shot themselves and sent in to us. Details are below.

>Here’s the week's Top 5:

4. "Can You Understand," by The Seed
5. "No More," by The Seed and "Blacksburg," by Mike Roos (tie)

How do you handle earworms?

A while back, some smart guys introduced the word earworm into pop culture. I even wrote a column about it a couple years back, and through my own error, got to have an interesting e-mail conversation with University of Cincinnati professor James Kellaris, who had been credited with inventing the word.

There is a question of the week here, I promise. One of our new editorial assistants, Heather Froeschl, inspired it. I inadvertently put the theme from "Sanford and Son" in her head. Even though she likes the song, she was trying to get some work done, and it was distracting her. So I wrote her this faux public service announcement:

> Once a song gets stuck in your head, you need to replace it until the earworm has time to burrow back into your subconscious. So, think of a song you know well, but that isn't likely to get stuck -- for me, it's Average White Band's "Cut the Cake." Soon, the earlier song will be gone bye-bye, and you can progress with your day.

> Brought to you by Citizens to Eradicate Ear Worms -- CEEW.

That's my method. How do you get rid of earworms?

MusicCast top 5

From new channels guru and sundries Dwayne Yancey:

>For the second week in a row, "OxyContin Rock" by the Roanoke Allstars has claimed the top spot on the MusicCast. So that now makes three weeks in a row that The Seed have been out of number one, after holding it down for nine weeks. "Demijohn" by the Pickin' Buds had the other week. They're still around, and so is Red Clay River, which has made a return to the Top 5. But Jimmy Danger, featuring Neanderpaul, has fallen out. Will "Nothing But Wrong" return? Likewise, "Blacksburg," by Mike Roos, another former number one video. Stay tuned. We base the MusicCast Top 5 on who gets the most plays so if there's someone you like, just keep on clicking.

>If you think your band's video should be in the Top 5, well, post it to our site, and maybe it will be. Three of these are videos the artists shot themselves and sent in to us. Details are below.

>Here’s the week's Top 5:
1. "Oxycontin Rock," by the Roanoke Allstars
2. "No More," by The Seed
3. "Can You Understand," by The Seed
4. "http://blogs.roanoke.com/musiccast/user_submitted/your_videos_truenoke_music.html," by the Pickin Buds
5. "http://blogs.roanoke.com/musiccast/r/red_clay_river.html" by Red Clay River

Next update coming: August 6
