Ex-Beatle Pete Best coming to Roanoke

He was the Beatles' drummer before Ringo Starr. And after all these years, he's still slapping the drums around. And you can catch Pete Best at Awful Arthur's, Towers Shopping Center, on May 28.

We'll get you more details as they come to us, and I'll be working on getting an interview with Best. But we may never get an answer to the big question -- why was he booted from the Beatles? According to the bio on his Web site, "Unfortunately, in circumstances still clouded in mystery
Pete Best was dismissed from the group he had played with for over 2 years."

Now for a couple of quick highlights I couldn't fit into 12 column inches of newsprint.

Another rain check for Van Halen

OK, the Van Halen concert in Charlottesville has been rescheduled again. VH is taking off six weeks so Eddie Van Halen, "who is currently under doctors' care, can continue medical tests to define a course of treatment," according to a news release from Live Nation.
The Charlottesville show is now set for April 19. In honor of March Madness, anybody want to start a pool to predict if this show's ever gonna happen?

Searching for the Stanley Brothers

I went to visit Gary Reid yesterday at his Copper Creek Records warehouse off U.S. 460.

Reid has been in the bluegrass business for more than a quarter-century. In 2003, his label produced its first Grammy-nominated album, Roland White's "Jelly on My Tofu." At 1999's Bluegrass Music Awards, Reid won the award for best liner notes, for a Country Gentlemen box set, which was on Rebel Records.

Recently, he produced a Stanley Brothers retrospective for the Time-Life series. When it comes to the Stanleys, Reid seems to be a completist.
