May 8, 2008Country music great Eddy Arnold has diedHere was one of the smoothest cats ever. Arnold died this morning. When I was a kid, I used to sit with my Dad a lot of Saturday and Sunday mornings and watch country music TV shows. This was before CMT and GAC. Just half-hour shows where you could see singers like Arnold, Faron Young, etc. I wasn't a huge country music buff as a kid, but even I could see past that and recognize what a voice Arnold had. Effortless. My Dad wrote me this today: "Eddie Arnold was just awesome ... on record and on stage." And he added that Jerry Reed is apparently not doing well. Reed might be better known for "Smokey and the Bandit" and "Cannonball Run" and all those flicks you can see in perpetuity on basic cable, but he had been a nasty electric fingerpicker who counted Chet Atkins among his peers. As you'll see in this vid, Reed too was effortless in his monstrousness. |
