Question of the week: Your favorite local acts
We've touched on this one a little bit recently, but haven't fully fleshed it out.
So, here we go. Tell us your favorite local bands, solo acts, duos, whatever. And put a Web link to them, if you can, so we can all hear just how awesome they truly are!

Nancy Hunter : →http://www.theheartofva.orgTommy Edwards, of course! He's such a prolific songwriter, it's amazing. He plays guitar, madolin, lap steel....even the kazoo! Whether solo. with his band (The Tommy Edwards Band, to include the very talented Brad Taylor and Demitrius)or at an open mic with Jeff Maiden (another must see), this guy ALWAYS delivers! Mike Sebolt : →http://www.myspace.com/highpointcoffeeandtea.comOK... my 2 cents
Male solo - Corey Hunley - He has a wide range and can really bring it on a guitar as well. He has a myspace site. Also Tommy Edwards. - Powerful voice and message. Wide range. Lots of fun.
Female Solo - Jess Pillmore and Kristie Emmons - Both are strong women with strong messages.
Both have a myspace sites
Favorite Duo - Brad Archer and Donna Pearson. - Tons of fun!
Top groups (no particular order) The Wading Girl, The Aardvarks, Barefoot West and The Ben Hurt Band. All lots of fun and really do a great job with the "all ages" crowds.
We have links to all of these folks off of our myspace site.

MudflapThe most talented group of musicians around (and yes they have been around for a while) has to be TK421. For a full on rock show with great energy and brilliant originals you can't get much better.

BrianSouth29 is by far one of the best bands I've seen in this area in ages. I saw them tear the roof off of Blues BBQ a few months back. Just wish theyd come through more often. If yall dig Hendrix and power trio rock & blues you should check them out.

EddieAnother Triscale fan here... and if you haven't seen them, you should give them a shot. You'll be amazed with the sound. I have to admit they're looking like they have "it" - a trio with a good sound.
This band has a bright future and are my most recommended.

Nixon : →http://myspace.comI don't know a lot about the less sonic bands, but TK-421 may be the best all-around rock band. I guess Stations takes the punk title. I'll take Bad Dog for the cover act. My personal fave was the LOUDEST band, Dark Ruin. They are now defunct, but they were amazing-especially their drummer. I think they are actually on here playing for Timescast???

You can catch em both at Awful Arthur's
[May 30, 2008 2:36 PM]
the other PeteSpeaking from the geriatric ward, several of these bands sound interesting (is "TK421" a reference to something, like the way "BR549" was taken from HeeHaw?), but my tinnitus causes me to miss most loud rock shows nowadays. So I mostly know the semi-acoustic acts, and since I prefer the instrumental side to singer/songwriters, the names would include Stacy Hobbs, Scott Perry, and Be-Bop Hoedown. Tom Ohmsen and Al Coffey are fine players who float among several groups.
Lenny Marcus, Bernard Hairston, Kelly Gravely, the Pace brothers, and Flip Shoemaker are all dependably fine jazz players, and there are still some fine longtime players like Ray Wilkes and William Penn who are still going. There are really too many good bluegrass musicians to name, and some really significant names, like Hershel Sizemore and Shirley Hunter, can still be heard locally on occasion.
Plus, I must mention David Wiley's RSO, for both their symphony and pops work. This week's show even includes some rock&roll tuneage, and their soloists and section leaders, like Wallace Easter, are consistently good. Wiley has open ears that bring Rke. maybe better than its' variable support warrants.
And, admittedly going offtopic, but there are area musicians whose musical work I enjoy, but that is done off the bandstand, such as ex-funk/jam band bassist and booker Dylan Locke, banjo and tuba playing DJ Seth Williamson, symphonic composer and DJ Steve Brown, mando picking studio boss Tom Ohmsen, and a certain drummer for whom the phrase "press rolls" now means a deadline. (Wednesday night, he wasn't the second best drummer at Awful Arthur's, according to Wayne Newton fans.)

BLS Hottie : →http://www.myspace.com/blackrainfan69Black Rain
ORIGINAL rock, all local, all homegrown. The singer has some of the strongest vocals in Roanoke, the guitars are flawless, the drumer is on key and the keyboard/bass are heavy grooves that make you want more.....

Animal : →http://www.crobarcane.com/I can not believe nobody has added the great local band, Crowbar Cane.!!! Please, check them out at your first chance.!!!!!

Amy Hanek : →http://www.houseonthegladehill.blogspot.comLiving in Franklin County, you would guess I don't really catch much of the latest in the way of cool music (do they even say "cool" anymore?).
Well, that's true. My 3 kids keep me home at night too.
Keeping this in mind, the best band I have seen (and one of the only bands) has to be Rock Lily.
I can't find a website and don't know too much about them, but I rocked out a little on July 3rd last year, at the Franklin Co. HS. It was a good thing.
Yeah, I know. Sad, isn't it?
[June 2, 2008 8:48 AM]
