Question: Your thoughts on contemporary songwriters

Over the weekend, cable viewers could see documentaries on Bob Dylan and the late Townes Van Zandt. That inspires this week's question:

Who among the new breed of songwriters can build a legacy that will last decades down the road? Is there even one out there now?

Maybe I'm just a moron, but I can't think of one as I write this. Maybe that's because I spend too much time listening to blues and jazz from the early- to mid-20th century. So hip me.

My first two thoughts are John Mayer and Ray LaMontagne.

We have some middle and high school students who play at open mic on Tuesday. They write their own stuff. Just amazes me! There is some really good, young talent out there and we need to continue to encourage it!

The only one who comes to mind right now is a young man named Josh Ritter. If you've never heard of him, it's well worth your time to check him out.

One of the very best songwriters on the scene is from right here in Virginia. Richmond to be exact. Andy Stepanian with The Wrinkle Neck Mules is astounding. He literally paints with words and music. The new cd The Wicks Have Met is full of great stories and meaningful well written tunes.

Dave Carter maybe, though he's now dead. If a couple of his songs get picked up for the right movie or ad campaign, he could still get discovered. He was a terrific songwriter, easily among the best post Townes Van Zandt Texas songwriters.

A few that come to mind that I think will still be talked about and listened to years from now are Ted Leo, Chan Marshall aka Cat Power, M. Ward, E. aka Mark Everett of the Eels, Neko Case among others.

Wow. Thanks for all the comments! BW, I had not heard of Dave Carter, but went searching for him and found the Web site of his one-time partner, Tracy Grammer. If you all don't know him, go to her site, tracygrammer.com, and hear some song samples. Good stuff. Josh Ritter I have heard, and refreshed my memory at his myspace page, myspace.com/joshritter. More good stuff! Mr. Critique writer, your artists are definitely good ones, and best of all, they're local. There are plenty of chances to go see the Magic Twig folks in action, so do it! They're young, and they will only get better, I think. Kent has also given us some good names. I probably like M. Ward more for his musianship than his songwriting, but Neko Case is going to be one of those artists who influences people for years, maybe even decades, down the road. I'm not saying this just because I've got a tiny little crush.
