July 14, 2008Your boy on drumsA couple of months ago, I wrote a story that nobody read. It was about open mic nights in Roanoke. While I was going to the different bars and reporting it, I actually sat in a few times. At one of the shows, a friend of mine got video. So now you all get to see how lousy I am. Check me out, jamming at Martin's, with open-mic host Aaron Oberg on bass, and Heevahava's Sean Matuk on guitar. It was fun, even if the drums were set up opposite from my left-handed style. Without further ado, as if you needed proof that I don't know what I'm doing ... |

PeteSeems pretty good to me, but then I don't usually think about a drum kit being set up righty or lefty. Is the difference just the snare placement? I can see how cymbal placement is always a very personal preference in any case. Does handedness correlate with footedness, i.e. are there right vs. left footed bass pedal players? Asked because I remember the double bass vogue in the wake of Ginger Baker; (I think Kent Musselman of teen band the Cynsashuns was the first local drummer to get such a kit), then came the heavy metal drummers' arms race, culminating in the cliche gong, a drummers' ultimate Spinal Tap accessory. More cowbell!!!
Baseball has switchhitters, why not switchdrummers? This is drumming ala Hendrix (just pick up & go)...very impressive to me. You're good. Six of the last eight presidents have been left handed, and both major candidates this year are. Beat that, northpaws.
And I suspect more people read that article on open mics than you claim, Tad (although your story omitted open Mike night at RMH ).

TadThanks for the comments, and for reading that piece. I had a blast hitting all the open mics, and I wish I could go to them as steadily as I did when I was reporting the story.
Pete, my favorite "switch-drummer" is Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick. Every time I see him play, he has his hands doing different things. But he keeps the kit set up the same, so he's not switch-footing it!
As for the hand-foot correlation, I am left-handed but right-footed (or -legged), which opens up decent possibilities for me to play a right-handed setup (snare and hi-hat to the left side of the bass drum), if only I had time to practice enough to re-school my feet.
