Your Medeski Martin & Wood review goes here

MMW plays Jeff Center. We can't make it. That's where you come in.
If you go, post your review in the comments section. We'll run excerpts next week in Extra.

Addendum: I've heard that fire alarms went off during the second set of this show. Has anyone heard anything about this?

I am always amazed at how the band comes up with a variety of sounds using common instruments, but at last night's show, there was one sound no one was expecting.

Halfway through the second set, the Jefferson Center's fire alarms went off.

At first, Medeski, Martin and Wood weren't fazed. They began imitating the sound of the alarm.

But then the lights came on and the crowd was told there was "a real fire emergency" and that we had to leave.

Has anyone heard what happened? I figured it was some idiot in the bathroom trying to light one up.

Most impressive about their performance is that they wrote the music for the whole show (as far as I understand) about a week ago in preparation for a new 3 CD set. Avant-garde jazz or not, they are a talented trio of musicians, for sure. Too bad The Jeff turned into a night-club/bar at the end of the evening, before the fire alarms went off! I still haven't heard what happened...

I regretted having to miss this show, and I am curious how many people went. Talking to Dylan Locke after the very lightly attended Bill Frisell makeup show in June, he said that he felt the MMW show, as of then, had not been promoted as much as it should have. I'm less familiar with MMW than Frisell, but have acquantainces who love 'em, and have travelled pretty far to see 'em. I'm glad they still played two (1 and 1/2?) sets, thanks for the reports.

The MMW show was excellent, as expected. It had been a few years since I had seen them, and they never disappoint. As far as the fire alarm goes, it seems odd that it happened at about the same time that the tanker-truck fire was happening about a mile away on 220. I don't know why the JC fire alarm would've had anything to do with the truck fire, just an odd coincidence, I guess. I just figured the alarms were going off because the band was smokin'!!! Oh God, did I just say that? Sorry, that was bad.

By the way, Pete, the MMW crowd was smaller than their show at the JC in 2003. This time they didn't even open the balcony, and the lower level was only about 2/3 full. I bought my tickets 4 days before the show, and they still had 700 left at that point, for what that's worth.
